Retake or not...??

Hi Everybody ,

I got a 700 in GMAT yesterday , Quant 49 and Verbal 37 . I am not happy with my score as i really wanted to get 720 but i am happpy i got above 80%ile in both the sections . I hope the 80/80 split will offset my otherwise low score . I have done an MBA from India with 65% marks and then i worked with Glaxo smith kline consumer healthcare ltd as a territory sales executive for 3 years in India before immigrating to Canada . Here is a brief look of my profile :-

EDUCATION
Bachelors in Science with Physics ,chemistry and Math
Masters in English Literature
MBA in marketing with 67% marks from one of the good Universities of India

WORK EXPERIENCE
Was the only one to get Pre-placement offer on the basis of my summer training
Joined Glaxo smith Kline consumer Healthcare ltd and handled Punjab region as a territory sales executive for 2 years and 7 months before immigrating to Canada

EXTRA ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Was part of the mega-successful launch of world's number 1 sensitivity toothpaste , Sensodyne , and received a Spirit award 
Some other awards at GSK and attended 3 international conferences at Malaysia , Thailand and Dubai 
Won a silver medal in chess at University level and was the captain of school and college cricket team

CURRENTLY i am working with THE BRICK ( The largest retailer of Furniture , appliances and electronics in Canada ) as a Sales Consultant . My current job is very challenging and solely commission based . I was working full time while preparing for GMAT and never joined any coaching classes .

Can anybody please tell me how good my profile sounds and which all schools should i target . Do i need to retake the GMAT ..?

This question factors a few variables:
• Whether you are applying as an Indian or Canadian applicant
• The competitiveness of the schools to which you are applying
• Whether a 700 is close to your maximum score

I see from your profile that you are based in Canada. If you are applying as a Canadian you will be in a less competitive applicant group than if you are applying with India as your country of origin.

The more competitive the school, the higher GMAT score you will want to have to increase your likelihood of gaining acceptance.

If you had been scoring in the mid-700’s on your practice exams that would indicate your potential GMAT score is higher than if you had been scoring around 700. Also, if you had taken the test more than once and this was your highest score that would indicate a 700 is close to your maximum score than if this had been your first shot.

So, if you are applying as an Indian to competitive schools and you feel 700 is not close to your maximum score than retake the test. Conversely, if you are applying as a Canadian to less competitive schools and you feel 700 is close to your maximum score than concentrate on your applications.

Thanx buddy , 
 I am a Canadian permanent resident but Indian citizen . Can I apply as a Canadian resident to get that advantage ?? . . . In any case I will have to mention my country of birth, origin and citizenship . . . So is it possible to apply as Canadian on basis of my permanent resident status ???

I corrected my initial reply. Unfortunately, I think most applications ask the question whether you are a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or Foreign National and then if a Foreign National your Country of Citizenship. So, in that case, you would be applying as an Indian.

This was my first attempt at GMAT . As my 700 is an 80/80 split I feel this is a good score . I want to try my hand at 4-5 target schools before retaking GMAT and reapplying next year . My target schools are

1 ) KELLOGG :-coz I think I can write a great essay for their first topic . 2 ) WHARTON :- they give a lot of preference to 80/80 split .
3 ) SCHULICH and QUEENS :- They are in Canada , cheaper and average gmat required is 660 so I should be strongly competitive there. MOREVER they all don't look down upon a second MBA . I have room to apply for 1 more school . Plz suggest which other school should I apply to . LBS ?? PLEASE point out flaws in my argument if any . Thanx.

A 700 score for an Indian candidate is not a good score for applying to Kellogg and Wharton. So, my suggestion would be to retake the GMAT test.

LBS is an excellent school as well. I would suggest, though, that you pick some schools less competitive than Wharton/Kellogg/LBS but more competitive than Schulich and Queens. I do not know enough about your background and goals to recommend which ones.

All Indians don't have same background . 700 is not enough for Indians but enough for rest of world so that means all the rest are dumb asses compared to Indians ?
