Rita's monthly salary is \(\frac{2}{3}\) Juanita's monthly salary. What is their combined monthly salary?

(1) Rita's monthly salary is $ 4,000.

(2) Either Rita's monthly salary or Juanita's monthly salary is $ 6,000.
Solution:

We need to determine the combined monthly salary of Rita and Juanita, given that Rita earns 2/3 of what Juanita earns in a month.

Statement One Alone:

Since Rita earns $4,000 a month and if we let J = Juanita's monthly salary, we can create the equation:

4000 = 2/3 * J

J = 4000 * 3/2 = 6000

Therefore, together they earn 4000 + 6000 = $10,000 a month. Statement one alone is sufficient.

Statement Two Alone:

If Rita earns $6,000, then Juanita will earn more than $6,000, their combined monthly salary would be more than $12,000. However, if Juanita earns $6,000, then Rita will earn less than $6,000, their combined monthly salary would be less than $12,000. Since their combined monthly salary could either be more than $12,000 or less than $12,000 (depending on who earns $6,000), statement two alone is not sufficient.

Answer: A

In statement 1, there is a definite information about Rita's salary, and in the question, there is a definite information between Rita and Junaita's salary.

So putting the values there, we can see Junaita's salary is 6k.

Adding two of the salaries we get the answer is 10k.
In statement 2, it's not giving a definite information. We can choose accordinly. If we choose Junaita's salary is 6k, then Rita's salary is 4k.

So we would get 2 different values for 2 of the choices, and thus can't be considered. So the correct option is A.
