Not since Galileo suffered the “scurvy humor” of the Inquisition has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue a theory.

(A) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue
(B) did a religious organization so effectively curb the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue
(C) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist to pursue
(D) did a religious organization so effectively curb the ability of a major scientist to pursue
(E) has a religious organization so effectively curbed whether a major scientist had the ability that he could be pursuing

main sentence has word suffered , look for llism by same verb-ed
option B,D are negated
also since+has is correct usage
option E; wordy sentence and is not ll
option a & c ; in option A ; he could pursue is not required

IMO C

Splits : So that Vs So

(A) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue -- looks goof keep it
(B) did a religious organization so effectively curb the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue--- should be curbed
(C) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist to pursue -- No That , Eliminate
(D) did a religious organization so effectively curb the ability of a major scientist to pursue -- No That , Eliminate
(E) has a religious organization so effectively curbed whether a major scientist had the ability that he could be pursuing -Eliminate

So Option A is Correct

Kudos ..please

Working with inversions, Seperate SVO pairs and write in the order of SVO, you get the inverted pair.

Original inverted text.

Quote:

The mark of inversion could be seen in the verb 'has' preceding the subject 'a religious organization'.

Rewrite

Since Galileo suffered the “scurvy humor” of the Inquisition, a religious organization has not so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue a theory.

'Since' is an adverb here marking the time of 'when" and not a conjunction meaning 'because'.

'So' is often used as an adverb of manner as in 'how did she sing? So did she sing. Many times, it is also an intensifier meaning a huge quantum as in "how effectively?" - so effectively.

Between A and C

A. has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue

C) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist to pursue

C is short and straight .

Hi daagh ,
Wouldn't C mean that it is the religious organisation that wants to pursue something?
For eg. : Why did the religious organisation curb the ability of a major scientist?
To pursue....blah.

A seems more clear than C in this respect.
Please help. Thanks.

To pursue is placed next to scientist and there is no comma to separate scientist from 'to pursue". But the other contender is so far away.

Not since Galileo suffered the “scurvy humor” of the Inquisition has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue a theory.

(A) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue --> INCORRECT : Not sure what is the antecedent of pronoun 'he', Galileo? or a major scientist?
(B) did a religious organization so effectively curb the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue --> INCORRECT : For the same reason as answer (A), ambiguous antecedent of pronoun, and there is 'since' in the sentence, so we should use Perfect Tense, not Past Tense.
(C) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist to pursue --> CORRECT : For resolving ambiguous pronoun and using Perfect Tense.
(D) did a religious organization so effectively curb the ability of a major scientist to pursue --> INCORRECT : Using Past Tense instead of Perfect Tense.
(E) has a religious organization so effectively curbed whether a major scientist had the ability that he could be pursuing --> INCORRECT : Wordiness and the using of whether is inappropriate here.

Can I eliminate wrong choices with those reasons?
Someone please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks. :)

Your reasons for rejecting B, D, and E are perfect. However, in A, since there is only one name i.e Galileo, and since he was also the only major scientist, I do not think, there is any need for entertaining an ambiguity about him. 'A' is simply worried than C, although it is grammatically and idiomatically correct. Concision is a professed aim of SC.

Not since Galileo suffered the “scurvy humor” of the Inquisition has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue a theory.

(A) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue (incorrect: tenses error)
Could with has does not fit. Could indicate past and has is related to present
(B) did a religious organization so effectively curb the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue (incorrect: tenses error)
Since is used to connect past to present hence did is incorrect.
(C) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist to pursue (the best option)
Conveying clear and concise meaning
(D) did a religious organization so effectively curb the ability of a major scientist to pursue (incorrect: tenses error)
The same as option B has
(E) has a religious organization so effectively curbed whether a major scientist had the ability that he could be pursuing (incorrect: tenses error)
The same as option A has
