main sentence has word suffered , look for llism by same verb-ed
option B,D are negated
also since+has is correct usage
option E; wordy sentence and is not ll
option a & c ; in option A ; he could pursue is not required

IMO C

Long story short:
The sentence talks about a religious organization that has put a check on the scientists if they want to pursue a theory.

First split point here is the use of word Since, Always use Present Perfect tense whenever since is used in context of time. So B and D are gone.

(A) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue --- Sneaky one!! one can easily fall for this option since it nicely have the S0 THAT construction, but SO THAT expresses a cause and Relation, now observe dos the above SO THAT construction expresses any cause and relation ;)
(B) did a religious organization so effectively curb the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue -- as explained above it is wrong
(C) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist to pursue --- now this statement is clear as daylight and also by POE we are left with this answer only :)
(D) did a religious organization so effectively curb the ability of a major scientist to pursue -- as explained above it is wrong
(E) has a religious organization so effectively curbed whether a major scientist had the ability that he could be pursuing -- Never Ever I repeat never ever use Past Perfect Tense when Sine is used as a context of time

Not since Galileo suffered the “scurvy humor” of the Inquisition has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue a theory.

Splits : So that Vs So

(A) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue -- looks goof keep it
(B) did a religious organization so effectively curb the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue--- should be curbed
(C) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist to pursue -- No That , Eliminate
(D) did a religious organization so effectively curb the ability of a major scientist to pursue -- No That , Eliminate
(E) has a religious organization so effectively curbed whether a major scientist had the ability that he could be pursuing -Eliminate

So Option A is Correct

Kudos ..please

I used a lot of LSAT CR. At the same time it was important to switch back to GMAT CR before exam
because reasoning is different and you need to adjust your CR skills to GMAT .

Original inverted text.

Quote:
Not since Galileo suffered the “scurvy humor” of the Inquisition has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue a theory.

The mark of inversion could be seen in the verb 'has' preceding the subject 'a religious organization'.

Rewrite

Since Galileo suffered the “scurvy humor” of the Inquisition, a religious organization has not so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue a theory.

'Since' is an adverb here marking the time of 'when" and not a conjunction meaning 'because'.

'So' is often used as an adverb of manner as in 'how did she sing? So did she sing. Many times, it is also an intensifier meaning a huge quantum as in "how effectively?" - so effectively.

Between A and C

A. has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist that he could pursue

C) has a religious organization so effectively curbed the ability of a major scientist to pursue

C is short and straight .
