Because young children do not organize their attention or perceptions systematically, like adults, they may notice and remember details that their elders ignore.

A. like adults
B. unlike an adult
C. as adults
D. as adults do
E. as an adult

Sentence requires contrast – only option B provides
Answer: B

Believed to originate from a small area on their foreheads, elephants emit low-frequency sounds that may be used as a secret language to communicate with other members of the herd.

A. Believed to originate from a small area on their foreheads, elephants emit low-frequency sounds that may be used [ Modifier is next to the noun that it modifies – Hold it]

B. Elephants emit low-frequency sounds that are believed to originate from a small area on their foreheads, and they may use this [ this has no clear referent and “this” cannot point to plural sounds – eliminate it]

C. Elephants emit low-frequency sounds, believed to originate from a small area on their foreheads, that they may use [ “believed to originate from a small area on their foreheads” modifies elephants not sounds – eliminate it]

D. Originating, it is believed, from a small area on their foreheads; elephants emit low-frequency sounds they may use [ Semi-colon conjuncts two closely related independent sentence. The first sentence is not completely independent ; “It is believe” awkward – eliminate it]

E. Originating, it is believed, from a small area on their foreheads, low-frequency sounds are emitted by elephants that may be used [ Modifier issue – eliminate it]

Answer: A

Biologists believe that they have found one of the substances that tell individual genes both when to become active and when to remain quiescent in the earliest phases of an embryos development.

Here that modifies “one of the substances” so it requires a singular verb.
Eliminate A and B

A. tell individual genes both when to become active and when to remain

B. tell individual genes both at which time they should become active or should remain

C. tells individual genes both when to become active or remain [Hold it]

D. tells individual genes both when to become active or when to remain [ Extra “When to remain” creates an awkward construction – eliminate it]

E. will tell an individual gene both about when it should become active and remain [ “and” not preferred – eliminate it]

Answer: C

1. IMO D
D. Young children do not organize as adults do.

2. IMO C
A. 'Believed' modifies 'elephants', not 'sounds'
B. 1)'and they may use this' - > this doesn't match with 'sounds'
2)'that are believed to originate from a small area on their foreheads'
-> 'that' : restrictive clause. Non-restrictive clause is better.
C. low-frequency sounds,(which are) believed to originate from a small area on their foreheads
D&E-> Ackward

3. IMO A
"one of the substances that tell individual " -> one of 'plural noun' that tell
-> 'tell' should be a plural form
-> if 'the only one' -> singular form

Anyway.. What are the OAs?

1 ) D > || ism

2 ) C > misplaced modifier

3 ) A > .. it is once of the subtances that > that modifies substances and not 'one of the subtances' + in choice B both..or is wrong .
