Scientists have created genetically modified (GM) tomatoes to produce antioxidants that could help people improve their health. These GM plants produce a type of nutrient that may protect one against cancer if tomatoes are taken in small quantities every day. Hence, eating GM tomatoes regularly can effectively check the incidence of cancer.
Which of the following, if true, weakens the conclusion above?
A. Researches have established beyond a reasonable doubt that eating GM tomatoes in larger quantities may cause cancer.
B. Researchers have established that the causes of cancer are hereditary in nature.
C. Taking coffee upto four cups a day is found to prevent cancer and all those who were eating GM tomatoes were also coffee drinkers.
D. Other GM food crops are not found to have any role in preventing cancer in those who eat them regularly.

This question is not as carefully written as an official GMAT CR question would be. For instance, C makes reference to "those who were eating tomatoes," when no actual study was cited in the original argument. If this were an official q, it would need to say that a study showed that those who ate tomatoes had a lower incidence of cancer. Then the assumption would be that there is no other reason for the result than the tomatoes that people were eating, and C would be clear.
However, in spite of these flaws, I was able to throw B out at a glance. Knowing that the cause of cancer is genetic doesn't tell us whether we can do something to prevent it. Something we eat could affect gene expression, or (using less fancy science), could counteract the effects of a genetic problem. That puts B completely out of scope. We are only worried about prevention, not determining the root cause. (We knew something had to cause cancer, and for our purposes, it doesn't matter what it is, unless it turns out to be tomatoes!)

Can someone help to explain how option C is correct. The argument seeks to establish that eating GM tomatoes would help in reducing cancer incidents and has not given any case study of incidence of this happening; however, option C is sharing example that people who were eating GM tomatoes were also coffee drinkers. So, if there hasn't been any conversation about the implementation of the GM tomatoes, how can option C weaken the conclusion.
