You start by telling the truth! There are certain ways to describe things that will paint you in a better light. Can you give us more information about the gap year?

You also can schedule time with one of our consultants to prepare you for your interview. Here is a (slightly older) link for convenience about our general interview prep process:

Hi, looking for a review

Canadian citizen and Canadian undergrad degree with a bad GPA [1.7-2]
710 GMAT 47Q
5 years work experience in asset management at major bank

Are any of the good schools in the states within reach given the bad gpa? Top 40ish?

It's as good as an explain will get.

Will the AdCom care? Almost surely. They are going to stack you up against others who started businesses and didn't have such low GPAs. The argument will also be that academia is perhaps not your thing and your best off just continuing on your entrepreneurial path.

We just want to make you aware that an explanation isn't as pass. It's open to interpretation.

Tough to say. GPA isn't as clear cut as GMAT though it's good that you have a solid score.

Top 40 might be an option. Apply to a wide range of schools. Also, make sure you write the optional essay explaining the low GPA assuming there's some sort of reasonable set of circumstances.

Hi Admissionado!

Is 7.59 from a top tier IIT considered as low score for M7 MBA?
How much will it dent my chances there?
My GMAT Focus score is 695 (~750 in classic GMAT) with (Q90|V82|D82) and have completed FRM and CFA L2.
Also got 2 research papers on payment systems and deep learning published in international journals.

It should be fine. Before evaluating your chances for M7, I need to know more about your background. Please reach out to us for a free consultation so we can discuss privately in more detail.

All of that is legitimate, so if you are keen on applying for an MBA you should write about this in your optional essay. It'll inevitably tie to your career essays when you speak to these accomplishments in more detail. The story will make sense.

That said, I'm not sure how MBA programs will view your GPA. It's very low. Plus, the argument here is that you are clearly very into entrepreneurship, which is great. They'll wonder if you really need an MBA since you clearly prioritize building a business above academics. What's to say you wouldn't do that if given a spot in their program? Therefore, you need to be very convincing about why you need an MBA and how you will stick to the curriculum to graduate.

Happy to help,
Admissionado
