Sulfur dioxide, which smells like rotten eggs, is formed in smokestacks from sulfur and oxygen, two of the major elements consumed in coal smelting, react with each other.

After slash and burn....

Here we have 2 subject verb pair and to connect them 'when' is perfect to use. Both are dependant activities.

A. is formed in smokestacks from

B. is formed in smokestacks when

C. is formed in smokestacks, and when: no dependance

D. formed in smokestacks when: past tense with when changes sentence structure

E. formed in smokestacks fromSame error as A

A. is formed in smokestacks from
Incorrect use of 'from' for the meaning of sulfur and oxygen combined,

B. is formed in smokestacks when
correct. Correct use of verb 'is'. 'when' is correctly used as it describes the combination of sulfur and oxygen (Clear meaning)

C. is formed in smokestacks, and when
Different meaning. No connotation for sulfur and oxygen in the process.

D. formed in smokestacks when
Out because of ambiguous reference of 'formed'.

E. formed in smokestacks from
same reasoning as D.

A is wrong because idiom and by meaning
from x to y is correct
and by meaning they react with each other when something happen not from

Hi VeritasKarishma GMATNinja why is A wrong here?

'from' is a preposition. You cannot have a clause (A and B react with each other) after it.
You need 'when' to begin the clause.

Hello gmat club team,

I have a query.
As per my understanding, 'when' can only be used in context of 'time'.
But here in this case, the use was not in context of time... so is kind of usage of 'when' is correct as per gmat exam rules?

I have a query.
As per my understanding, 'when' can only be used in context of 'time'.
But here in this case, the use was not in context of time... so is kind of usage of 'when' is correct as per gmat exam rules?
Hi Vkat.

"When" can be said to be used in the context of time in a loose manner in the correct version of the sentence in this question.

The part of the sentence that begins with "when" can be said to describe the times "when" sulfur dioxide forms in smokestacks.
