I recall from my own experience
the toughest Qs on D day were of smallest size :P

No. 4>The aristocratic values expressed in the writings of Marguerite Yourcenar place her within the French
classical tradition, as does her passionate interest in history, particularly Roman history.

(A) as does
(B) so do
(C) as do
(D) so is the case with
(E) similarly, does

A .... because "passionate interest" is singular

Answer A

"as" fits best for comparison of two things here.

Hi, guys. it should be "D". Choices A,B,C and E make no sense logically since they all indicate that her passionate in roman history place her in the French tradition.

(A) as doeshere the subject her passionate interest is singularhence we require does. at the same ime comparision is made between The aristrocatic values and her passionate interest. and we know as is to compate clause. so this answer choice seems correct
(B) so do wrong comparision and subject verb error. so is not used to compare
(C) as do comparision is correct but subject verb erroe
(D) so is the case with wrong for the reason stated above

hence A is correct
(E) similarly, does
It does not. B,C are completely wrong. D, E are wordy. A is perfect. 'As' is apt for comparisons

Re: The aristocratic values expressed in the writings of Marguerite Yource [#permalink]
The values expressed in X place her within Y, ________ her interest in Z.

(A) The values expressed in X place her within Y, as does her interest in Z.
As does connects Z with X within Y with the conjunction as. Does is the singular form of do connecting with the singular interest. Seems fine

(B) The values expressed in X place her within Y, so do her interest in Z.
Do is plural but interest is plural. (x)

(C) The values expressed in X place her within Y, as do her interest in Z.
Do is plural but interest is plural. (x)

(D) The values expressed in X place her within Y, so is the case with her interest in Z.
Like A, this groups X with Z, but it feels wrong. Can 'case with' be used in formal English?

(E) The values expressed in X place her within Y, similarly, does her interest in Z.
The values expressed in X place her within Y is an independent clause (it can stand alone as a sentence).
Similarly is an adverb and it can start a new sentence, but (I believe) it cannot act as a conjunction like in the passage above
e.g. Mary is studying grammar. Similarly, John..., or
Mary is studying grammar; similarly, John..., not
Mary is studying grammar, similarly, John... nor
Mary is studying grammar, similarly John....

(A) as does: No error, keep it for now
(B) so do: wrong, interest is singular
(C) as do: same error as in option B
(D) so is the case with: wrong, comparison b/w her aristocratic values and interest in history is being made in the original sentence. 'so is the case with' phrase is not allowing the same
(E) similarly, does
: wrong, comma splice error (similarly can't be used as a conjunction)

So, option A seems to be the best one here

Please give kudos if the explanation helps!

Re: The aristocratic values expressed in the writings of Marguerite Yource [#permalink]
Hello!

I hope my reasoning for this question is correct. Please Help someone.

The aristocratic values expressed in the writings of Marguerite Yourcenar place her within the French classical tradition, as does her passionate interest in history, particularly Roman history.

THE AV PLACE HER WITHIN FRENCH CLASSICAL TRADITION
AS WELL AS HER INTERREST

COMPARISON BTW - ACT OF PLACING ( VERB) - THEREFORE AS IS REQUIRED

INTEREST IS SINGULAR - DO(ES)

(A) as does -
(B) so do
(C) as do
(D) so is the case with
(E) similarly, does
