IMO A
I think the correct idiom is "replaced with" .

The correct answer choice A misses "with".

Project SC Butler: Sentence Correction (SC2)

For SC butler Questions Click Here

The business of harvesting ice during winter and storing it for use in summer became popular towards the late nineteenth century, a practice they eventually replaced with mechanical ice-making machines.

A) a practice they eventually replaced

B) but the practice was eventually replaced by

C) a practice eventually being replaced with

D) a practice that eventually replaced by

E) but they eventually replaced the practice with

A & E - What is 'They' referring to? So A& E are out.

D- The use of 'by' is awkward.

C - 'Being replaced' shows that the older practice is still continuing. The sentence clearly says that it 'became popular' towards 19th century. It is not being used anymore.

Hence, B is the correct answer. Parallelism correctly used.

A) a practice they eventually replaced
E) but they eventually replaced the practice with
no antecedent for pronoun "they" So A and E are out

C) a practice eventually being replaced with
this is unnecessarily wordy. usage of "being" should be taken with a pinch of salt unless absolutely necessary.

D) a practice that eventually replaced by
This is a fragmented sentence because there is no verb in the underlined portion. practice is a noun here.
It would have been correct with a verb like this -
The business of harvesting ice during winter and storing it for use in summer became popular towards the late nineteenth century, a practice that was eventually replaced by mechanical ice-making machines.

B) but the practice was eventually replaced by
correct

The business of harvesting ice during winter and storing it for use in summer became popular towards the late nineteenth century, a practice they eventually replaced with mechanical ice-making machines.

Meaning Analysis: Some business of Harvesting ice with some specific technique became popular in late 19th century; however this technique was replaced with other technique.

A) a practice they eventually replaced - Pronoun ambiguity; Antecedent of they is missing.
B) but the practice was eventually replaced by - Seems OK, FANBOYS after comma, joining two independent clauses.
C) a practice eventually being replaced with - Use of being not warranted.
D) a practice that eventually replaced by - Working verb is/was absent.
E) but they eventually replaced the practice with - Pronoun ambiguity; Antecedent of they is missing.

B
Also, need to check usage of replaced with/by:

"I replaced the old rug with a new one."
"Paper bags have been largely replaced by plastic bags."
Replaced by is correct here.

31 seconds to pick B.

Quote:

A) a practice they eventually replaced
E) but they eventually replaced the practice with

Unfortunately, I don't have any referent for "they". Is it people? businessmen? animals? Who knows. Sentence doesn't mention anything. So both A and E are out.

B) but the practice was eventually replaced by - This seems okay to me. The practice referring back to harvesting.

C) a practice eventually being replaced with - I obviously have a problem with "being" specially when used in middle of the sentence. Also it denotes the incorrect tense. The practice was already replaced with something else then why being?

D) a practice that eventually replaced by - "was" (or the tense) is missing. Second "replaced with" and not "replaced by"

The business of harvesting ice during winter and storing it for use in summer became popular towards the late nineteenth century, a practice they eventually replaced with mechanical ice-making machines.

FACT 1 -> the practice of harvesting is getting replaced by machines, so A is clearly out. A is presenting the case the other way round.
FACT 2 -> We are not filling a tank, hence we should use replaced by -> C and E are out.
Also, the practice got replaced and somebody didn't replace the practice. Hence Option E is out.
The remaining are B and D.
D needs a verb, as it is not complete. Hence out.

B

A) a practice they eventually replaced

B) but the practice was eventually replaced by

C) a practice eventually being replaced with

D) a practice that eventually replaced by

E) but they eventually replaced the practice with

The business of harvesting ice during winter and storing it for use in summer became popular towards the late nineteenth century, a practice they eventually replaced with mechanical ice-making machines.

Error Analysis : Pronoun "They" has no logical antecedent.

The construction is Independent Clause + Comma + Noun plus noun modifier , Which seems to be correct
"Replaced with" is incorrect, Replaced by is correct

A) a practice they eventually replaced - Incorrect

B) but the practice was eventually replaced by - Changes the construction but Meaning is intact. - Correct

C) a practice eventually being replaced with ( Use of Being is awkward, besides the construction is problematic, 2 ICs seem to be separated by a comma - Incorrect

D) a practice that eventually replaced by ( Improper modifier construction, there should be a proper verb )- Incorrect

E) but they eventually replaced the practice with ( They - Incorrect )

POE:
Stop point - 'They' is ambiguous here. We don't know what it is referring to.
Eliminate (A), (E).
Eliminate (C) - 'being' is redundant.
Eliminate (D)- 'a', here we are referring to a particular practice so 'the' is used

A) a practice they eventually replaced

B) but the practice was eventually replaced by - CORRECT

C) a practice eventually being replaced with

D) a practice that eventually replaced by

E) but they eventually replaced the practice with

A) a practice they eventually replaced

(A) behaves as an appositive modifier in this context. what immediately precedes this appositive modifier is not the intended subject. Hence, (A) is incorrect.

B) but the practice was eventually replaced by

Here, the usage of 'but' introduces an independent clause, and fits well with the whole sentence. The meaning of the whole sentence is perfect. Hence, (B) is the correct option

C) a practice eventually being replaced with

Eliminate (C) for the same reason explained for (A)

D) a practice that eventually replaced by

Eliminate (D) for the same reason as for (A)

E) but they eventually replaced the practice with

in (E), who exactly is "they" referring to? there is no clear plural antecedent to the pronoun 'they'. Hence, (E) is incorrect.

Experts please correct my approach. @GMATNinja@Karishma

Hello Nirmesh83,

We hope this finds you well.

Your approach is broadly correct, however, there are two additional errors that we would like to share with you.

Option C is needlessly wordy due to its unnecessary usage of "being"; please remember, “being” is only to be used when it is part of a noun phrase or represents the passive continuous verb tense; the use of passive continuous must be justified in the context.

Option D leads to a completely incoherent meaning due to the use of the phrase "that eventually replaced by"; the construction of this phrase is incoherent; for this phrase to convey a logical meaning, either "that" must be removed or the active verb "was...replaced" must be used in place of the past participle "replaced".

We hope this helps.
All the best!
