The charitable trust disbursed 8.7 million dollars in loans over the course of the last one year, however, now they don’t remember who they gave it to.
(A) however, now they don’t remember who they gave it to
(B) however, now they don’t remember whom they gave the loans to
(C) however, now they don’t remember who it gave it to
(D) but now it doesn’t remember whom it gave them to
(E) but now it doesn’t remember who it gave the loans to

Pronouns are clearly tested here.

First: they does not refer to anything. Should be it as we are talking about the trust
Second: who should be whom otherwise it is a subject
Third: it is wrong as it refers to dollars.

Option D corrects everything and it is the right choice

What "them" is addressing to in answer choice D.
If the plural "they" does not agree with the singular "trust" then how can we use "them" as given in the answer choice d.

The charitable trust disbursed 8.7 million dollars in loans over the course of the last one year, however, now they don’t remember who they gave it to.

(A) however, now they don’t remember who they gave it to If "they" refers to the plural noun "loans", in which case this sentence illogically says that "loans don't remember...". Alternatively, if we take it to refer to the charitable trust, then there is a pronoun number issue since trust is singular and they is plural. Secondly, the answer to the question "who did they give it to" is an object pronoun (they gave it to him/her/them). Hence, the correct usage is "whom" and not "who". Eliminate.

(B) however, now they don’t remember whom they gave the loans to Same pronoun error as (A). Eliminate.

(C) however, now they don’t remember who it gave it to Same pronoun error as (A) and (B). Incorrect usage of "who" as in (A). Eliminate.

(D) but now it doesn’t remember whom it gave them to Correct answer. Singular pronoun "it" refers to singular noun "trust" and "whom" is used instead of "who". No new errors are introduced.

(E) but now it doesn’t remember who it gave the loans to Incorrect usage of "who" instead of "whom" as in (A) and (C). Eliminate.

Hope this helps.

'They' is an Orphan pronoun in A, B & C. Eliminate them straightaway.

'it' in D & E refers to the collective noun 'Charitable trust'. That's absolutely fine.

Subject: Charitable trust

'Whom' is the right pronoun to be used for an Object.

Hence, D is the correct answer

(D) but now it doesn’t remember whom it gave them to
(E) but now it doesn’t remember who it gave the loans to

Official Explanation:

Answer: D

(A) This is a run-on sentence since however cannot be used to connect two independent clauses. Who is the wrong pronoun case, we require the objective case whom. The plural they does not agree with the singular trust and the singular it does not agree with the plural loans.

(B) This is a run-on sentence since however cannot be used to connect two independent clauses. The plural they does not agree with the singular trust.

(C) The plural they does not agree with the singular trust.

(D) The correct answer.

(E) Who is the wrong pronoun case, we require the objective case whom.
