Re: The chart above displays Forbes data for the distribution of billionai [#permalink]
1.1 In 2007, the United States had approximately____________more billionaires than Russia, the United Kingdom, and Germany combined.

A. 141
B. 274
C. 331
D. 360
E. 416

solution :
% of billionaries in US = 44% , % of billionaires in Russia - 6% , UK -3% and in Germany -6% .

So US - combined (Russia + UK+ germany ) = 44 - (6+3+6) = 44- 15 = 29%

so US has 29/100 * 946 = 274.34 more billionaires than combined (Russia + UK+ germany )

so answer is B) 274

1.2 If the portion labeled “Other” on the chart above represented 21 countries with equal numbers of billionaires, then each of these countries would have approximately____________billionaires.

A. 2
B. 12
C. 37
D. 51

SOLUTION:

total % of billionariers in others = 26% so total billionaries in others = 26/100 *946 = 245.96

now others is marked by 21 countries having equal billionaires , so each country has billionares = 245.96/21= 11.71

so answer for 1.2 q is b) 12

1.1 In 2007, the United States had approximately____________more billionaires than Russia, the United Kingdom, and Germany combined.

In 2007, Russia, the United Kingdom, and Germany together had 6 + 3 + 6 = 15% of 946 billionaires , while the United States had 44% of 946 billionaires.

Thus, The US had approximately
(44 -15)% of 946 i.e. 274 more billionaires than Russia, the United Kingdom, and Germany combined.

1.2 If the portion labeled “Other” on the chart above represented 21 countries with equal numbers of billionaires, then each of these countries would have approximately____________billionaires.
The contribution of "other" i.e. 21 countries together = 26% of 946 billionaires i.e. 246 billionaires.
Each of these 21 countries would have 246/21 i.e. approx 12 billionaires.

Thus,
Blank 1 : B. 274
Blank 2 : B. 12

1.1 In 2007, the United States had approximately____________more billionaires than Russia, the United Kingdom, and Germany combined.

US = 44%, Total Billionaires = .44*946 = 416.24 ~ 416
Russia+UK+Germany = 6%+3%+6% = 15%, Total Billionaires = .15*946 ~ 142

Difference = 416-142 = 274

A. 141
B. 274
C. 331
D. 360
E. 416

1.2 If the portion labeled “Other” on the chart above represented 21 countries with equal numbers of billionaires, then each of these countries would have approximately____________billionaires.

Others = 26%, Total Billionaires = .26*946 ~ 246
Billionaires/Country = 246/21 ~ 12

A. 2
B. 12
C. 37
D. 51

IMO Option B for both
