Hello expert,

Is answer B?
And if not, could you please explain your view in selecting the answer?

Hello VKat - Let me see if I can explain this.

The sentence structure is as follows:

The constitution of a democratic country specifies
- how the president of the country is to be elected,
- whether the citizens will have the right to remove him from office,
- as well as the duties of the president.

As we can see that sentence is trying to give us a list of the things that a constitution of the country specifies. Hence, for the last item in the list usage of "and" will be preferred.

Coming to your point now why not "B", B distorts the meaning. The list here is specifying the activities or process, mentioning "president will have duties" implies that - President will have to do some duties, now isn't that awkward as it goes without saying, that as President is a designation it is very obvious that the post will have some duties to be performed.

A. as well as the duties of the president ======> As the sentence contains a list, here "and" will be preferred
B. and that the president will have duties ======> Changes the meaning
C. and the president will have duties too ======> Changes the meaning
D. and what the duties of the president will be ======> CORRECT
E. as well as the duties that the president will have ======> As the sentence contains a list, here "and" will be preferred

Hope this helps!

i selected option E.

is option E wrong just because of the usage of 'as well as'?

for me 'what the duties of the president will be' sounds little awkward in option D.

can someone explain the difference between D and E in detail?
