However, A is convoluted and them in the second part of the underlined portion has an unclear antecedent.
D is the answer.
PS: a question almost in its entirely written in passive voice, almost never appear in the GMAT.

1. They/Them should be preceded by the plural chicken eggs rather than the singular chicken egg. A and E don't follow this rule and can be eliminated.
2. The word indicating should be followed by that. B and C don't follow this rule and can be eliminated.
Hence, we are left with D as the correct choice.
