D it is,

The federal immigration station on Ellis Island, which was first opened in 1892, then rebuilt in 1900,
processing nearly three quarters of all immigrants entering the United States in the first quarter of
the twentieth century.
(A) The federal immigration station on Ellis Island, which was first opened in 1892, then rebuilt in
1900, processing nearly three quarters of all immigrants entering the United States in the first
quarter of the twentieth century. Incorrect as which could refer both to ellis island or federal immigration station because both are singular and what follows which is also singular. Hence there is no clear referent.
(B) Having processed nearly three quarters of all immigrants who enter the United States in the first
quarter of the twentieth century, the federal immigration station on Ellis Island first opened in 1892
and then was rebuilt in 1900.Having processed has nothing to do with the rebuilding
(C) Processing nearly three quarters of all immigrants to enter the United States in the first quarter
of the twentieth century, the federal immigration station on Ellis Island first opened in 1892, being
rebuilt in 1900.Again meaning is distorted; and being rebuilt is incorrect.
(D) First opened in 1892, then rebuilt in 1900, the federal immigration station on Ellis Island
processed nearly three quarters of all immigrants entering the United States in the first quarter of
the twentieth century.Correct, as the sentence clearly separates the non essential modifiers from the main clause
(E) Of all immigrants to enter the United States in the first quarter of the twentieth century, the
federal immigration station on Ellis Island processed nearly three quarters of them, having first
opened in 1892 and rebuilt in 1900.federal immigration station is not an immigrant.

Hey guys!
I got the correct answer D because I spotted the adjective clause which was first opened in 1892 and then checked the entire sentence and found that D was the less wordy. However, I don´t know if my approach was the best. Please let me know.. Thanks!

the twentieth century.

(A) The federal immigration station on Ellis Island, which was first opened in 1892, then rebuilt in 1900, processing nearly three-quarters of all immigrants entering the United States in the first quarter of the twentieth century. -- This choice is a fragment with no finite verb

(B) Having processed nearly three quarters of all immigrants who enter the United States in the first quarter of the twentieth century, the federal immigration station on Ellis Island first opened in 1892 and then was rebuilt in 1900. .. It gives an impression that because it processed so many numbers of immigrants, the office was opened in 1892 and rebuilt in 1900 -- altered intent. In addition, the station was opened and not that the station opened something.

(C) Processing nearly three-quarters of all immigrants to enter the United States in the first quarter of the twentieth century, the federal immigration station on Ellis Island first opened in 1892, being rebuilt in 1900. -- to enter is an abuse of the infinitive. The station opened is wrong as in B. Being rebuilt in 1900, an adverbial modifier does not gel with the station's opening in 1892

(D) First opened in 1892, then rebuilt in 1900, the federal immigration station on Ellis Island processed nearly three quarters of all immigrants entering the United States in the first quarter of the twentieth century. -- Best choice

(E) Of all immigrants to enter the United States in the first quarter of the twentieth century, the federal immigration station on Ellis Island processed nearly three-quarters of them, having first opened in 1892 and rebuilt in 1900. --- having first opened in 1892 and rebuilt in 1900 gives a wrong picture of cause and effect

Is "having + verb_ed" is a bad structure?

in (D), would you tell me more about the two opening modifiers before the main subject. as per as I know, in this type of structure the second modifier will modify the first modifier. this does not happen here.

EducationAisle in correct choice (D) we have a modifier, modifier, noun entity such that both the modifiers modify the noun entity. But didn't we discuss that two back to back modifiers modifying one noun entity is something that GMAT doesn't like?

Hi Hoozan, you are right.

However, strictly speaking, the presence of then (First opened in 1892, then rebuilt in 1900) in some ways depicts that the second modifier (rebuilt in 1900) is a continuation of the first modifier.
