I think its D.

The greatest integer less than the least of the primes is a number that is smaller than the lowest prime in the set. If we take 2,3,5 we get the number as 1. (2+3+5)*1 = 10, which is inconsistent with what the question says.

If we pick 7,5,3 the solution looks like: (7+5+3)*2 = 30. Which fits the question stem.

Hence, D

Solution

Given:
    • The product of the sum of 3 consecutive prime numbers and the greatest integer, less than the least of the prime numbers = 30

To find:
    • The largest of the 3 prime numbers

Approach and Working:
    • Let a < b < c, where a, b, and c are three consecutive prime numbers
    • Thus, (a + b + c) * (a - 1) = 30
      o Since, {a, b, c} are primes, (a + b + c) must be greater than or equal to the sum of the three least consecutive primes = 2 + 3 + 5 = 10, and (a – 1) ≥ 1

    • 30 can be written as 1 * 30 (or) 2 * 15 (or) 3 * 10 (or) 5 * 6
      o The only possible case, such that {a, b, c} be 3 consecutive primes is 2 * 15, which implies, {a, b, c} = {3, 5, 7}

Hence, the correct answer is Option D

Answer: D

The product of the sum of 3 consecutive prime numbers and the greatest integer less than the least of the prime numbers is 30. What is the largest of the 3 prime numbers?

A. 2
B. 3
C. 5
D. 7
E. 11

So i misunderstood the question initially.

It states the product of

=> (the sum of 3 consecutive prime numbers) * (Greatest integer less than least of the three prime) = 30

I did hit and trial and got the following answer:
=> (7 + 5 + 3) * (2) (2 being the greatest integer less than 3)
=> 15 * 2
=> 30

Hence the D is the correct option.

A. 2
B. 3
C. 5
D. 7
E. 11

The three prime numbers are 3, 5, and 7, and the greater integer that is smaller than the smallest prime number in the list is 2. Thus, we have:

2 x (3 + 5 + 7) = 2 x 15 = 30

So, the largest of the three prime numbers is 7.

(1) The question is pretty easy as 30 is a very small number and with just two hit and trials the answer could be found.
Least sum = 2+3+5 = 10
So, product = 10*(2-1) = 10

Next set = 3+5+7 = 15
So, product = 15*(3-1) = 30, the right answer is 7.

(2) But say the number was something greater, we could still work upon them.
The factors of 30 are 2,3,5,6,10,15,30.
One of these factors is the integer less than least prime number. 2, 6, 10 and 30 give a prime number when 1 is added to it.
Least sum = 2+3+5 = 10
Thus, the integer must be less than or equal to 30/10 or 3.
Only 2 fits in amongst the factors.
So, the least prime number is 3 and the product is (3+5+7) * 2 or 30.
