The sale price of a certain jacket was 15 percent less than its original price, and the sale price of a certain shirt was 10 percent less than its original price. How much greater was the original price of the jacket than the original price of the shirt?

Let the original price of the jacket be J and the original price of the shirt be S. The question asks to find the value of J - S.

(1) The sale price of the jacket was $83 greater than the sale price of the shirt:

0.85J - 0.9S = $83.

Not sufficient.

(2) The original price of the jacket was $140:

J = $140.

Not sufficient.

(1)+(2) We can substitute J = $140 into 0.85J - 0.9S = $83, get the value of S and thus get the value of J - S. Sufficient.

Answer: C.

Hope it's clear.

The sale price of a certain jacket was 15 percent less than its original price,
Original price of jacket = j => sales price = 0.85j

and the sale price of a certain shirt was 10 percent less than its original price.
Original price of shirt = s => sales price = 0.9s

How much greater was the original price of the jacket than the original price of the shirt? => Find = j - s ??

(1) The sale price of the jacket was $83 greater than the sale price of the shirt.
=> 0.85j -0.9s = 83.
By above equation we cannot find j-s value.
Not sufficient

(2) The original price of the jacket was $140.
Alone original price of jacket not sufficient to find difference of jacket and shirt price
Insufficient

1+2
we know j = 140 and by statement 1 : 0.85j-0.9s- 83
Together we can find value of s and thus value of j-s
