The table above provides data for 10 common vegetable crops grown in the U.S. The average yield data is given in pounds per acre for one growing period. Weed susceptibility measures the effects of weeds on the crops at three levels: high, moderate, and low. Cold tolerance is explained in the second data tab.
Tab 2: Cold Tolerance
Cold Tolerance for Crops
Vegetable crops can be divided into several types depending on how well they tolerate cold, freezing temperatures, and frost.
Hardy vegetables require less light (a minimum of 3 hours of direct sun), can tolerate hard frost, and grow best in cool weather. Many will die, bolt, or go to seed when temperatures rise. These should be planted early in the spring, as soon as the soil can be worked, or late in the summer to be harvested in the fall. In areas with short periods of frost, hardy vegetables can be grown all winter.
Half-hardy vegetables require more sun (a minimum of 5 hours of direct sun), tolerate light frost, and grow best in cool weather. Some of them can tolerate heat, but many will bolt or go to seed when temperatures rise. These should be planted in the spring, about 2-4 weeks before the frost date. They can also be planted late in the summer for an early fall harvest, or during the winter in temperate regions without any frost.
Tender vegetables need more sun (a minimum of 7 hours of direct sun), do not tolerate frost, and grow best in warm (not hot) weather. Any frost will kill them, so they should be planted on or after the frost date, which usually occurs in late spring or early summer.

Information for Acme Organic Farm
Acme Organic Farm in northern Minnesota has a plot of land with 4 different one-acre growing areas labeled 1 – 4, in which only one type of the ten vegetables noted in the crop properties table is planted per growing period. Areas 1 and 3 provide at least 5 hours of direct sunlight on average during the growing season and areas 2 and 4 provide at least 8 hours of direct sunlight on average during the growing season. Areas 1 and 2 are more susceptible to weed growth and can only grow vegetables designated as low or moderate for weed susceptibility. Areas 3 and 4 are designated for any weed susceptibility. Each area can be used for three distinct growing periods within the growing season that are measured with the following planting and harvest dates:
Period A: April 15th to June 15th (only for hardy and half-hardy vegetables)
Period B: June 15th to August 15th (only for tender vegetables)
Period C: August 15th to October 15th (only for hardy vegetables)
1. To maximize total yield and meet all of the recommendations mapped out in the given information, which of the following crops should be planted in the three harvest periods for Area 2, in the order Period A, Period B, Period C?A. Celery, Lettuce, Brussel Sprouts
B. Celery, Lettuce, Onion
C. Celery, Cucumber, Onion
D. Fennel, Corn, Brussel Sprouts
E. Fennel, Cucumber, Onion
2. For the following statements, select Yes if the statement is true based on the data provided. Otherwise, select No.
| Yes | No | Statement |
| | In one growing season (made up of the three growing periods), ACME organic farm is able to harvest all of the 10 vegetables listed in the crop table. |
| | If one acre of each vegetable listed in the crop table is harvested at ACME organic farm, the total weight of the leaf parts harvested will be greater than the total weight of all other parts harvested. |
| | At ACME organic farm, none of the tender vegetables listed in the crop table can be grown in area 2. |
3. For the following statements, select Supported if the statement is supported by the information provided in the different tabs. Otherwise, select Not Supported.
| Supported | Not Supported | |
| | Radishes could be planted all winter in a location that only has short periods of frost during the winter. |
| | Sweet corn must be grown in a location with no frost during the year. |
| | Beets can be grown all winter in a location that provides at least 4 hours of sun and only short periods of frost. |

IR Butler 2021 - Practice 2 IR Questions Everyday.Question # 118, Date : 10-Mar-2021
This question is a part of IR Butler 2021.
Click here for Details Q2 - The table above provides data for 10 common vegetable crops grown in the U.S. ...Why is this unsupported?
Q3 - Presumably the answers correspond left - right to top - bottom.
For the last question, the answer for 'sweet corn must be grown in a location with no frost during the year' should be 'supported'. It's a tender vegetable and tender means no tolerance for frost.
