I don't understand how question 2 part 2 is correct. in the passage it refers to red ants being killed 60% of the time so how can we assume this is true for fire ants as well

Yes, I think the question would have been clearer if it used the same term throughout instead of switching between “fire ants” and “red ants.”

i am not getting why Question 3' -c part question is YES, how probability is <15% ?
Boiling water works about 60% of the time per mound, and there are 4 mounds, so the probability all 4 are eliminated is 0.6 * 0.6 * 0.6 * 0.6 = 0.1296, which is less than 0.15 (15%).

Statement 1

“Mound drench is more likely to control fire ants long term than boiling water.”

90% vs 60% = short-term mound kill
Long-term = queen survival → NOT addressed for these two

Thus long term is missing - Answer is No

Statement 2

“Community liaison thinks long-term control requires killing queens.”

What passage actually does:
Explains why bait works → reaches queens
Links that mechanism to lasting control

Hidden inference:
If something works because it kills queens → queens are the key

Final: YES

Statement 3

“Probability all mounds eliminated < 15%.”

0.6^4 ≈ (0.6^2)^2 = (0.36)^2 ≈ 0.13

✅ Final: YES

Please explain how this - "If 142 neighborhood lots, 80 of which are 1/4 acre lots and 62 of which are 1/8 acre lots, need to be treated with ant bait, the total cost of the ant bait would be less than $540." is no

Hi LavanyaK75,

This is a pure calculation, and the trick is just getting the per-lot cost right from Email #2 before you total everything up. Let's build it piece by piece.

Step 1 - Cost for a 1/4 acre lot. Email #2 says "1/2 lb of ant bait, which costs $10 per pound, is sufficient to treat a 1/4 acre lot." So one 1/4 acre lot needs 1/2 lb × $10/lb = $5.

Step 2 - Cost for a 1/8 acre lot. A 1/8 acre lot is half the area of a 1/4 acre lot, so it needs half the bait: 1/4 lb. That costs 1/4 lb × $10/lb = $2.50.

Step 3 - Total it up.
- 80 quarter-acre lots: 80 × $5 = $400
- 62 eighth-acre lots: 62 × $2.50 = $155
- Grand total: $400 + $155 = $555

Step 4 - Compare to the claim. The statement says the total would be less than $540. But the real total is $555, which is more than $540. So the statement is false - No.

IN Q3 part II, the questions says it helps in long term control and not ERADICATION. Shouldn't the answer be No?

No. The statement (“effective long-term fire ant control requires killing any queens in the fire ant mounds”) is about long-term control, not eradication.

Email #2 specifically says that the long-term bait treatment takes several weeks because enough poison must reach the mounds to ensure that the queens are killed. So the liaison clearly connects killing the queens with effective long-term control.
