In an effort to reduce their overstock, many fashion designers have cut prices; their clothes have been priced to sell, and they are.

A) have been priced to sell, and they are
B) are priced to sell, and they have
C) are priced to sell, and they do
D) are being priced to sell, and have
E) had been priced to sell, and they have

Could you please explain your choice? I am really confused with the second part of the sentence and do not know how to solove it.

I would go for C
they are price to sell and they do sell

it is the same type like this one

In an effort to reduce their overstock, many fashion designers have cut prices; their clothes have been priced to sell, and they are.

The immediate understanding is the fashion designers have cut prices, and this was done to price the clothes so that the clothes sell (easily, with low price tag). and they (Clothes OR Designers) are selling.

Only C tells us that the clothes are priced so that they (Clothes) sellout, and they (Clothes) do. This sentence gives us a clear meaning.

B) are priced to sell, and they have
C) are priced to sell, and they do
D) are being priced to sell, and have
E) had been priced to sell, and they have

Kaplan's explanation:

Read the Original Sentence Carefully, Looking for Errors:

The word are at the end of the sentence is meant to stand in for the full verb are selling . But as written, this sounds as though it is being replaced with are priced to sell, which would be redundant since we were just told that the clothes have been priced to sell.

Scan and Group the Answer Choices:

Answer choices (B), (D), and (E) all use the present perfect have while choice (C) changes it to do.

Eliminate Wrong Answer Choices:

Answer Choice (C) is correct. The implied verb is do sell , as in are priced to sell, and they do (sell) . This fulfills the desire of the writer correctly.

Choices (B), (D), and (E) incorrectly use have, as in are priced to sell, and they have (sold), which is not the intent of the writer.
