WOW. Amazing job in a month!
How were you practice tests before the July attempt?
What about right before the 770 attempt?

P.S. that's a crazy good improvement in 1 month. Congratulations!

bb - thanks for the message and for all your work on this website - it was so incredibly helpful!!

Practise test results (I only did 1 a week, MGMAT and the official GMATPrep ones) - the first time my results varied from 640 to 710 (test anxiety definitely got the better of me the first time!); the second time results ranged from 670 to 730 - I redid the GMATPrep exams and also had a few MGMAT ones left over.

Hi, good on you for resitting (book it in if you haven't already - that helped get my motivation back!!)

I'm afraid Quant was my weakness so I don't have too many suggestions for Verbal. I found the MGMAT books very useful for the SC theory and approach to reading / analysing questions for CR and RC.

If you haven't already done it, I would suggest reviewing which aspects of Verbal are your weakness so you can focus your studying accordingly / efficiently.

The CR approach I set out in my original post was a real life saver for me - I think it's outlined in the MGMAT guide, though it takes some time and comes with practise. The key for me was to spend time coming up with my own answer based on the question (e.g. if a question asked what would weaken an argument, I would identify the argument's main contention, the evidence for that contention and then think about what would weaken this evidence. Only after this pre-work would I look at the answers choices). This approach sounds time consuming but actually once you get your head around the "GMAT" way of thinking, I found this approach invaluable.

For SC, the MGMAT approach was also really helpful by eliminating the wrong answers, using "splits" etc. Also for SC, if you are from a non-engish speaking background, I have heard people say that understanding the meaning of sentences (intended meaning and where answers are modifying the meaning) was critical. One thing that made a difference for me was not allowing myself to read the sentences more than once or twice because then all the choices start getting confusing and I would start to second guess myself and waste time. I think once you're comfortable with the SC theory, this discipline of only reading once (max twice!) should be useful.

I hope that's helpful, let me know if you have any questions. Good luck!!!

Hi Shweta

Congrats awesome score, havent seen this much improvement in just a month...

Regarding Quant in your 2nd attempt, did you re-read all mgmat books and then did gmat club tests or you did it all together?

Also i have heard this that OG verbal part is very much similar to the real test unlike Quant is it true??

Thanks

ATB for applications.

Hi Prateek

Thanks for the message. On Quant - I read the books and my notes first (I might have tried one GMAT club test, I can't remember now)! I found those GMAT club questions so demoralising initially - the revision really helped!

On the OG Quant / Verbal question - I'm not really sure - I did most / all of the OG questions before the first time I sat the GMAT.

I wonder if for Quant, the types of questions might be fair but the OG might not contain enough difficult questions (i.e. 700+) for you to walk into the exam feeling comfortable that you can answer lots of hard questions - at least I think that's what let me down the first time.

I hope that helps! Good luck!!

Hey Shweta,

First of all, many congratulations. You have inspired me in ways that I can't express in words. I just took GMAT a week ago and scored in 500s and though I am devastated, I have already booked for my second attempt at GMAT which is in a month from now.

I would like to seek your opinion/advice on something that you have mentioned in one of the posts here. You wrote that you had quit your job prior to your second attempt. This provoked a question in my head that not being in a job at the time of appearing for interviews will be a hindrance of any sort? I ask this as I am contemplating of doing something similar. Your response will definitely help me clear some apprehensions.

Thanks for your message - I think this really comes down to personal circumstance. I was planning a career break and had a few things organised (travel, volunteer work) after the GMAT. Also, I'm applying to do a masters program, I'm not looking to go to business school and I don't have interviews in my admissions process.

Sorry I can't be more helpful! Good luck!!

Hi, Shweta,

This is a great story and truly motivating! After much scouring I am so glad to have stumbled across your debrief and also relieved to see that some one admitting to quant being a weakness and yet being able to break the 750+ barrier in a month.

I am in the exact same boat with a very similar score and a huge quant handicap in exams. So, I wanted to check with you regarding the GMAT Quant Practice questions and where did you get them from? Are these a part of the GMAT club test? Also, any other tips that you can share to improve the quant score - which topics to focus etc that worked for you, would be great!

Hi MBAjunkie

The Quant questions which I used for the second exam were from the GMAT Club questions on this website - they have verbal and quant questions which you can buy, I only used the quant (from memory you buy both together).

In terms of topics to focus on, I think I was weaker in number properties and algebra the first time I sat the exam. When i did questions and practise exams, as part of my review I tracked which topics and question types (ps/ds) I was doing, which makes it easier to review problem areas.

Hope that helps!

Shweta
