With only 12% of the hounds in the annual dog competition trials, the 200 year old shipman kennel won 42% of the awards, stunning dog handlers, judges and observers alike.

a.With
b. As
c. Being
d. Despite having
e. Although accounting for

let's make the argument simple.
one of the dogs of a certain species, which account only for 12% of the hounds in annual competition trials, won the 42% of the awards.

we need a contrast. the low number is contrasted with the high awards.
d. despite having----> we need a subject after comma that makes sense with the verb-ing modifier having. who has 12% of the hounds??
e.although accounting for---> what was accounted for..? a certain species of the dog.
we can have the name of the dog species directly after the comma.

hope it helps!

Ah, I thought the 200 year old shipmen kennel was a training group or something. Are you supposed to know that this is referring to a species of dog?

Absolutely not....You just have to infer from the sentence.

Forgive my ignorance but how are we supposed to infer from the sentence as to whether the passage is referring to a group of handlers or a breed of dog.

P.S I was under the impression that 'shipmen kennel' referred to some group of trainers

I suggest that you ignore this question and instead solve the official question that this question is based on.
