Bunuel, in the original sentence there are two things that made De Caprio famous - the film itself and the portrayal. In the answer C, only one of them is left. Doesn't it distort the original meaning? As I understand, when trying to uncover the meaning, one should always rely on the original sentence even though it might be grammatically incorrect. Then the correct answer choice should be expressing the same meaning.

No, this concept is not always correct. The original sentence could as well convey an unintended meaning. When there are two gramatically correct sentences, then we should select the one which has the same meaning as the original sentence (of course if the meaning is sensible). Nonetheless if there is only one gramatically correct sentence, we should select that one although it may differ in meaning from the original sentence.

In summary, it is not a good approach to elimiante an answer because it does not have the same meaning as the original sentence.

Hi sayantanc2k.

Can you please explain how first clause modifies Leonardo.

In options A, B or E it does not, and hence these options can be eliminated. In options C and D it touches Leonardo, and hence modifies correctly the intended noun.

While I agree that option C correctly modifies the intended clause, it doesn't present any contrast required to make sense with the words 'even though' present in he beginning of the statement -> this contrast seems most aptly described in option E.

In option C, even if we remove the first clause, the second clause can independently stand, and hence does not show any contrast.

I think this is a poor-quality question and I don't agree with the explanation. We want to compare his portrayal to his character. Not De Caprio himself. IMO should be B b/c his portrayal brought him popularity.

GMATNinja (since you comment on the GMAT CLUB TESTS questions , I tagged you )

Even though he portrayed many memorable characters in his initial career, it was "The Titanic" and his portrayal of romantic Jack Dawson that brought Leonardo De Caprio worldwide popularity and numerous awards.

A. it was "The Titanic" and his portrayal of romantic Jack Dawson that brought Leonardo De Caprio worldwide popularity and numerous awards.
B. Leonardo De Caprio's portrayal of romantic Jack Dawson in "The Titanic" brought him worldwide popularity and numerous awards.
C. Leonardo De Caprio earned worldwide popularity and numerous awards for his portrayal of romantic Jack Dawson in "The Titanic."
D. Leonardo De Caprio earned worldwide popularity and numerous awards based upon his portrayal in "The Titanic" of the romantic Jack Dawson.
E. it was his portrayal of romantic Jack Dawson in "The Titanic" that brought Leonardo De Caprio worldwide popularity and numerous awards.

according to the intended meaning and as per logic , the emphasis should be on the work done by LDC in titanic . the opening modifier starts with a few of LDC's works and later on EMPHASIZES that the WORK done by LDC in got him popularity.
In option choice C, the emphasis is on grammar and the intended emphasis on work of LDC is not conveyed how it should be. The same case as to what should follow a modifier occured in one of the OFFICIAL QUESTIONS where " the contributions of someone is following a modifier of someone" I'm not sure if yoou remember that OFC question.

Could you please clear my doubts-
Am i overthinking?
How is the expected emphasis conveyed in option C

Other are welcome to share their thots

I think this is a poor-quality question. the sentence starts with "even though" - Option C doesn't seem to provide any contrast while Option E provides that contrast. Could any one explain?
