Hi All,

Greetings..!

I hope you all are doing good out there.

Before getting down to the main topic let me introduce myself,

Myself Pushpak Khivansara [/highlight]residing in PUNE, I have completed my BE (IT) in 2011 and have been working with IT company from last 3 years. Had a dream to do MBA but thought of taking up some work experience first and now the time has come to fulfill my dream carrier.. Now lets get down to the main point,

I am drafting this message, as I am new to GMAT. So I need some help from you guys which can help me out in starting with the GMAT preparation.

1. Is it necessary to join a coaching class for GMAT, if yes then which are the best coaching institutes in PUNE.
2. Which are the best books available in market for GMAT preparation. (Please mention the authors name if possible)
3. Are there any groups (in PUNE) who have currently started with their GMAT group preparation. (Please provide me with your email id or cell number)
4. Give me name of online websites which can give me good information or study material regarding the same.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Pushpak Khivansara :)

At the very onset , I would like to articulate that I am a GMAT aspirant like you and I am not a moderator promoting any particular ONLINE/ OFFLINE course . Although I reckon some online courses such as E-gmat . Magoosh , Economist , Kaplan etc etc have been helpful in preparing for gmat yet I leave that selection on your wise wisdom . I shall be writing my GMAT in the near future once I am contented with my preparation .

To answer your first question "Q1. Is it necessary to join a coaching class for GMAT, if yes then which are the best coaching institutes in PUNE ?"

ANSWER : If you believe your math problem solving skills and basic English skills are average or above average, a coaching class isn't really necessary. You could test your skills by solving the first 50 questions from each section of The Official Guide for GMAT® Review. In case you find it too difficult and time consuming to solve those questions, it's a good idea to join classes. There are coaching centres such as :-

1. Dilip Oaks Academy
Address: Malati Madhav, 819, Bhandarkar Institute Road, Pune, Maharashtra 411004
Phone:020 2567 8066

2. Jamboree
Address: Office No. 83 & 84, 5th Floor
C Wing, Shreenath Plaza
Dyaneshwar Paduka Chowk
FC Road
Pune - 411005
Mob: +91-9595085500, +91-7620785500, +91-20-64505500

3. TIME ( This institute is all across India , So it has to be in Pune )

4. IMS ( This institute is all across India , So it has to be in Pune )

To answer your first question "Q2. Which are the best books available in market for GMAT preparation. (Please mention the authors name if possible)"

ANSWER: As someone who is preparing for GMAT I would like to share how I prepare , which books I refer to etc

Books Used:
OG 13th edition Book , Quantitavie Review , Verbal Review , 700-800 Question Set on GMAT club forum .
Maintain Error Log
Download the Excel Sheet of Question of OG 13 . This helps . Trust me!
Manhattan GMAT SC , RC , CR Books . Fab Books .
Quant Questions from -Bunuel (Bunuel_Signature_Collection_ALL_IN_ONE_WITH_SOLUTIONS)
Quant700-800
GMATClubGrammarBook
GMAT Club Math Book v3 - Jan-2-2013
Magoosh_GMAT_eBook
1000 SC , RC , CR
Kaplan Premier Book .
2 CATs and questions from mba.com
You should buy CATs from any two of these : Manhattan GMAT , Kaplan GMAT , Princeton Review GMAT , GMAT Club Tests however try to write atleast 50 Full Length Tests atleast . Though sounds heavy , yet its my way of looking at GMAT since I am a non native speaker and a slow learner .

Studying:
Usually 6-9 hours on weekdays . MUST!
Usually 10-12 hours on Saturdays and Sundays. Usually 1 CAT on the weekend with review (weekend usually included going back to redo old questions, even questions I got right before) MUST!

Advice:
1) The books were pretty good, but there’s a lot of advice that conflicts from book to book, so it takes a little while to figure out what’s true and what’s not. The OG 13th edition is a MUST HAVE.
2) Find an expert to work with. Use a course or a tutor.
3) There’s a lot of bad advice out there about pacing, representative questions, etc. (and the problem is a lot of it’s free). Be suspicious. If you practice something for a full month and it doesn’t work, then it’s not going to help you hit your goal. Be prepared to learn some new things.
4) Stay calm and write everything down. GMAT questions are actually pretty straight forward if you just stay organized.
5) The Quant section is NOT a math test and the Verbal section is NOT a vocabulary test, so don’t treat them like they are.
6) Learn which questions to avoid.
6) Take the breaks, no matter how good you feel. Have a snack, a drink and run to the bathroom.

To answer you third question "Q3. Are there any groups (in PUNE) who have currently started with their GMAT group preparation. (Please provide me with your email id or cell number)"

ANSWER : No Idea  .

To answer your last question "Q4. Give me name of online websites which can give me good information or study material regarding the same."

ANSWER: GMAT Club Forum , Follow GMAT Club Forum and two people on GMAT Club:- bb ,Bunuel ; They can really help you . Their posts are very helpful .

Lastly since you are looking for gmat prep you can check some of these links . They are as under :-

topic80727.html#p605856

gmat-study-plan-low-cost-online-study-courses-153193.html

And Please do not forget sir Bunuel , his quant questions are MUST .

Hope you find my post helpful .

Yours Sincerely,

Thank you!

Regards .

All the best bud! :) :)

I would like to add- Learning concepts in just part of GMAT- Your scoring range will be on how you maintain your composure when any question stumps you- If you are behind and need to catch up on the pacing.

I agree lot of practice can help you with that but beware you have to practice perfect to achieve perfection. Pay attention to Quality over Quantity and pick the tests that are recommended.

Hi Everyone,

I like the active replies from everyone. I am new to GMAT and planning to give GMAT in Jan 1st week 2015. I am average in Maths and below average in English. Will this 3 month time be suffice to crack GMAT? Apart from these 2 sections, how can I practice for other 2 sections AWA and IR?

Current Reference books. MGmat 4th edition 8 books for basics in next 2 months and then OG 15 in December. Please advice.

Thanks,
Chandan

Hi Chandan :)

To answer your first question "Q1.Will this 3 month time be suffice to crack GMAT?"

ANSWER: Well sir , "3-month time" is very subjective thing . It depends on how you are preparing . Two scenarios:

Scenario1: If you are preparing on weekends ( generally people who are in job do so because that's the only free time they get ) , then I presume that is not sufficient . Again that scenario is based on my assumption that you were not in touch with books for a while , but if you are comfortable than it is sufficient .

Scenario2: If you are preparing on week days and putting 4-5 hours each day and taking GMAT mocks on weekends than that scenario is quite plausible .

However as I said earlier the simplest recommendation for that would be that If you believe your math problem solving skills and basic English skills are average or above average, a coaching class isn't really necessary. You could test your skills by solving the first 50 questions from each section of The Official Guide for GMAT® Review 2015. In case you find it too difficult and time consuming to solve those questions, it's a good idea to join classes. Classes can be Offline/ Online ( it really does not matter , its a matter of personal preference ) . Online courses like E-gmat , Magoosh etc are good .

To answer your first question "Q2. How can I practice for other 2 sections AWA and IR?"

ANSWER: To prepare for AWA . Read this link , I really can not add anything more in it .

how-to-get-6-0-awa-my-guide-64327.html

NOTE:

For AWA and IR you can worry about that later . The reason I say that is because this is a bit elaborate . To put it simply they are important but they come in play in much later.

Detailed reason is below:

The admission offices at the top business schools are always flooded with qualified applicants who have high GMAT scores. Which ones stand out? You may ask.

Students who have high IR score will definitely stand apart

Usually, At top B-schools such as IIM –A,B,K etc , students with high GMAT scores flood the admissions office. The number of students who are in the range of 700+ is huge. Fortunately enough, the admissions officers might actually prefer the 710 student over the 740 student if they knew that the 710 student has a better IR score than the 740 student . This is not currently the way it is, but as IR becomes more and more accepted, such a scenario could be quite plausible. It acts like tie-breaker in literal sense .

Let’s take this scenario for example: The final admission seat in IIM-A is down between two possible candidates:
Candidate 1: Q50 / IR 8
Candidate 2: Q50 / IR 5

Who is that luck guy? Well c'mon! You know it

Hope you find my post useful

All the Best Chandan :-D
