So I retook the GMAT with an original 700 (Q47,V39,IR 5, AWA 5) last week and scored 790(Q51,V50, IR 8, AWA 5.5).

First, I am not a Brainiac but I also didn't put a lot of months of studying so my advise may not be really helpful.

I'm Indian male engineer from Mumbai and I barely managed a first class in chemical engineering with a 63%.

I took the first GMAT in December after 3 weeks of study including 1 week of full time (10 hrs/day) of study before my test. My weakness clearly was being lazy and lack of preparation which made time management a big problem on my GMAT. I remember blindly guessing 4-5 question on verbal due to lack of time and 2-3 questions of quant for the same reason.

My preparation test scores aren't great either (I remember my first prep score being as low as 510 followed by some 630-680 range scores and a few 720-740 scores).

I did soak up the OG (only material purchased for study) fully and practiced a lot of those questions online for my second attempt. I used MGMAT flash cards and GMAT club for various problems (silent observer of Bunuel's awesome questions and explanations). Probability was my weakness and worked on that a lot too.

For verbal I would highly recommend Magoosh question and answer explanations (Whatever I could pull up or get my hands on online) apart from the OG.

One thing that worked for me the most is a lot, and I mean a lot of full length practice. (even while practicing from the OG online link i would design practice to match the real timing thing). Another thing I can think of or advise is to take the real test at a time you're most productive (I'm not much of a morning person and my first test was in the morning so decided to take my second test as late in the day as possible). A final piece of advise would be to review all answer explanations of your practice test, including the ones you get correct (so as to know alternate methods / short cuts possible to save time on the test).

That's about it, I guess I'm not the person to write a great debreif (explains my lowish AWA score). So If anyone wants any particular assistance holla up.

PS: If you live in Mumbai, I am willing to give my OG (Beer would be a good way to say thanks if you're a guy and coffee if your a girl, but I am not too demanding :-D) PM me and I'll get back to you with my Cell #

Cheers

Hi Devilbart,
790 is indeed a devilish score. Congratulations.

I found your review very motivating for two reasons: like u Im an engg. guy from India and definitely not a morning person :-D

Can you tell me how you prepared for maths?

Hi nitz19arg:

Thanks for the appreciation and Kudos. I didn't really do much apart from what I already mentioned in my debrief. Just refreshing Area/Volume formula for geometric shapes, reviewing parabolic equations and graphical interpretations, Arithmetic and Geometric Progression formula, sum of n even numbers/ sum of n odd numbers, formula for sum of all interior angles of an n sided polygon, number of diagonals that can be drawn from a polygon with n vertices, etc. etc.. the basic stuff...

Is there a specific area or question type you're struggling on or need advise that I can help?

Cheers

Hey Devilbart,
thanks for the prompt reply. :-D
Actually my problem is: In my effective 2 months of prep, Ive spent most of my time on verbal as of now.
As of maths, I have covered a booklet of Jamboree which has basic formulas and 5-10 questions of medium difficulty for each topic.
I have not yet touched the OG.
I gave a full length test in which I scored good in PS but failed miserably in DS(as I had no prior experience.)
What I am lacking here is the strategy to prepare myself for tough questions. Is there a particular source you would recommend?

For starters I probably see why you're stuck on the DS and that's a really common phenomenon. To fix DS issues you need to work the root of the problem. Register for a free 5 online videos of MGMAT (a.k.a Manhattan Prep) and watch each of those 5 videos they're a great starting point to your GMAT journey and teach you how to approach all types of problems. Particularly good for DS.

Next, don't procrastinate over the OG. Get going on it. As you start doing more and more real GMAT problems your confidence will rise.

I really don't know of that book you mentioned so cannot comment.

Once your mid way through battle ground start searching challenging problems outside of og on clubs like this one.. I can mention Bunuel's name a million times and not stop for how awesome his q&a explanations are.

Don't overdo verbal. I can imagine why you're focusing more on verbal but don't underestimate your verbal ability as well don't overestimate quant. While being an engineer helps. The GMAT quant is more about pattern and decoding patterns and less about complicated calculations. Similarly while not bring sharp at written English can make you feel you need more verbal practice it is all about patterns too and once you catch the waves, you'll ride the tides too.. You don't need to be a native or have great vocabulary to crack the GMAT verbal. Just recognize the patterns and practice along with deeper analysis with answer explanation will be sufficient to crack the code.

Hope it helps.

PS: pardon the typos, not used to doing long messages over the phone

Congrats on the score. I'm curious about how you improved your verbal score by 11 points? Getting to V45 is difficult enough, but how were you able to score 50? Besides Magoosh, what steps did you take to improve your weaker areas?

Hi rf3d3r3r: I didn't aim for a V50 to be honest. I was happy with a V39 and would've taken that the second time around too. I retook only to push quant up as I knew I could easily manage a V49+ with some more prep.

What worked for me in the big jump in verbal is really working the timing issues. Pay more attention to chopping time on RC and CR questions which gave me more time for SC questions to improve accuracy. I would initially take a lot of time specially on RC and thats why I recommend doing all your practice, whether verbal or quant in a real time simulated fashion. That worked for me but again it was never the real 'desire'. From a resource perspective, Magoosh and OG is enough for quantity. Quality is relative to how deeply you are willing to analyse your weaknesses and work on them.

Also, In the quest to improve quant score and timing on quant, I was able to breeze through my quant section during the test and had about 10 minutes left for the last 2 questions. so I took a sort of an extra break until my verbal section started by delaying submitting the last answer. Stamina is important to help concentrate and avoid silly mistakes. Not sure if this helps but it worked for me.

Big congratulations man! That's an awesome score. Thanks for your debrief and pointers.
I would appreciate if you can guide on your verbal preparation. Any particular sources and timing strategies that helped?
How were your mock scores on Magoosh mock gmat? Do you think it is representative of real GMAT?
I am also doing Magoosh and really like it, but I am still weak on verbal. Tend to take a lot of time on RC's and CR's

Thanks a lot,
Andy

I scored 740 on Magoosh mock if I remember correctly with a much lower verbal.

The most representative result I've had is the Veritas Prep (Q51 V49) 790...

I would say keep up the good work and you'll get there. Focus on what works for you and not what worked for me or anyone else. For RCs I was in the same boat as you and then really started to push myself to 'read and process' faster during my preps and practice sessions. Breezing through the question before going to the passage helps too and so does taking short notes as you move from one para to another (Just very brief notes viz. Z said this constellation is oriented in Q way but in 1808 W said it was in R way... not sure if i can explain correctly but i do have a knack to scribble complete crap and make full sense of it in summary).

devilbart, dude... you are one hell of a motivation for the highly competitive if not cursed, Indian Male Engineer pool. Kudos to you.

I have attempted few practice tests myself with a preparation of around 2 months. I have scored a 710 in recent one but I am really frustrated with my RC, any suggestions on how to improve the same? If only I could increase my accuracy in RC to more than 70%, as I have for SC and CR, I may be able to have something to be proud of.

Once again... a big congratulations on the score and all the best for school applications.

"jugglerG2"

Thanks :-D I'm still trying to figure out how I pulled it off. I looked at my score sheet again just to confirm. Yup. 790

The RCs can be tricky. My accuracy with RCs was >80% but more time taken.. I pushed it to 95% accuracy in less than the 2 min slot per question or so. The question you ask me reminds me of the Stanford essays... Don't ask me or anyone else HOW questions to be honest. You're already at a pretty strong level there. Ask yourself the WHY questions. Why are you not able to boost it upwards? Are you a slacker? Definitely not, based on you're practice scores, then why? Do you read less? Do you read in english and process in hindi? may be not... It's all very very subject bro. I can't get in your head and figure it out. But you can. Once you know the what and the why to complete depth. The answer will follow.. I can give generic advise like, read the newspaper more often (preferably a US newspaper) or the one I gave to someone in this thread to take brief notes etc. But I think you're already at an advanced level and from here on forward it is all about those little flaws.... You may need to introspect deeper as to why you are not able to push it up. What is it that is going wrong in the process, not the question alone.. Sometimes its just practice that does the magic..

I know my advise above sucks, but it's true. You really need to ask yourself that question and not me...

WOW! Holy Crap! Omg omg Your score is awesome! You are the man. I have the same score split as your first attempt scores, but I don't think I can ever match your second attempt scores.

I have to say folks like you make us lesser mortals feel so much more inferior :( *ENVY*

Enjoy that score punk.

Not true... If I would've thought the same way, I would never have managed this score...

Anyone can score a 760+ if you are willing to put in the effort... Whether its worth it is a different story.....
