Short Term: Strategy/Management Consulting
Long Term: Take up a general management role(maybe a role in strategy and planning team) for an established firm
Hi anurag18, how does Strategy/Management Consulting align with your past 7.5 years of software experience?

After spending so much time in the industry, the endeavor should be that goals are aligned with your professional experiences so far.

p.s. Your Q/V split is not skewed (I noticed you asked this question on a separate thread).

Hi

I am looking to get me profile evaluated for ISB and to get some guidance on the application process. My GMAT score is 690 and I have diverse 3 years experience in Dairy Cooperative sector under several leadership roles. Due to government initiative and hard funding in dairy sector, I have done infra projects for my company. Due to my wide experience, I wish to work in operation management in the future and I am looking for someone to guide me and assess my chances at ISB.
Hi gagan03, since you are a mechanical engineer, operation management would definitely be a decent career goal.

However, you would need to emphasize on operations related aspects of your current job in the dairy sector, so that your goal in operation management comes across as seamless and not some figment of your imagination.

Once you emphasize this experience, you need to articulate why you still think that a MBA from ISB will help. ISB does offer a specialization in Operations Management; you might want to highlight this.

Also, operation management is a skill that is valued in various industry sectors. It would also make sense if you could state whether you have any specific industry sector in your mind.

This score definitely need to go North nick06jun, if you are serious about ISB.

Clearly Verbal needs focus. You have good 3+ months before the ISB R2 deadline. Make sure you utilize this time.

Good luck.

Hey

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I have handled the technical and commercial (but not sales) aspect of the work and it is after that experience that I decided to go for operational management. As far as industry is concerned I have FMCG and health sector in my mind but I will be open to consider other options too.

Is my profile and GMAT score OK for ISB?

Thanks

Hi bhuvangoyal9, you've not mentioned your undergrad college name or your undergrad degree, or the organization name.

These factors do play a part; crucial one at that.

Hello MrRabbit,

Thank you for tagging me. I am looking at your profile completely from an adcom perspective.

1. You have some great brands on your resume - working with BCG and Moody's a big plus for you.

2. Great career progression - starting with a boutique firm , moving to PE and now BCG. It's great progression in terms of the job role as well as the scale of projects you would have been exposed to.

3. Post MBA career goal makes perfect sense with someone with your kind of background. You are perfectly in the average experience that is required too.

I am sure you can showcase great leadership skills - leading a team and the results of the projects you did together.

You have an ideal profile for someone who would want to get into PE /VC firms post MBA.

However 640 is the only red flag here. If there is a reason for not getting in - this is the only issue. With everything else being extremely impressive, I would suggest you
take another shot on GMAT. You have a great chance - I am sure 1 month of effort can get you there.

It will improve your chances of an admit for sure.

You can PM me your ESR - we can take a look and see how we can plan this.

Hope this helps.

rgds,
Shree

Hi gagan03,

Thank you for providing a detailed profile and I must say this is amazing. Let's first talk about your stats. Right from school to GMAT, they are average. Talking specifically about GMAT, it is about 20 points lower than the ISB average. Now, you have a great profile on all the other aspects so it depends on you if you want to retake GMAT and try enhancing your score and so, your chances at the schools or focus primarily on the other aspects.

Now, your work-experience is definitely great. I can see some really strategic roles in your profile and so strong impact of yours on the organization and your achievements are evidences to it. You have great leadership experience and the best part is you have the credentials to your job which is very important in industries like dairy. Your ECs and hobbies, too, are great and very unique. Motivating people and leading them to a better life is great work you are doing. So, overall, I feel your profile is strong and with the right story, you can definitely connect with the adcoms.

Yes, about your post-MBA goals, I do understand your reasons for pursuing MBA but they are very generic. This is only the first step, realizing the importance of management and looking for MBA. But then you have to think about why you need those management skills and where do you want to implement them (which industry) and how an MBA will be crucial to your long term aspirations. So, you'll have to fine-tune these goals and we are delighted to guide you and try to address your hiccups. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi MrRabbit,

Thank you for providing a detailed profile. Let's have a look, first, at your work experience. A great career trajectory with some good leadership experiences and knowledge across various industries. You have big names associated in your profile which obviously is an advantage and should imply that you have worked on big projects which should be communicated to big impacts. And in all the organizations you have been part of, I can already see a good contribution of yours. So, your work-ex is great but here is the thing, you will be competing with the same pool of applicants, some may be having even greater experience and much better stats than yours. Then, why would adcom consider you? So, first, you need to get your GMAT right (at least 700+), to at least have a fair shot and then, obviously, the framing of your story and application which should set you apart from the pool and explain how YOU should be selected and not others. So, for now focus on GMAT becuase 640 is quite low and if you need any guidance now, we can hop on a call to discuss your profile at length and plan ahead. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Thanks

Gagan

Hello gagan03,

I think you have a diverse and a competitive profile. I am sure with your experience working with Dairy sector and Infrastructure projects will help you craft an impressive story for schools such as ISB. In my view 690 is good score, it's lower than the average but I still feel your profile will be able to make up for the lower than average score.

A higher score will help, but 690 is not a deterrent. Your plan to get into operations makes sense too. Your experience in supply chain ( if that was part of your role being in the dairy sector) or vendor management when managing infra projects will be interesting to showcase. I have seen profiles that have gone onto work as operations heads post ISB with similar experience.

I believe you have a chance and can see some great career progression too. Focus on a tight application - making sure you highlight your strengths well.

Hope this helps,

Regards,
Shree

Hi iamprashant,

Very impressive profile, acads, and especially the GMAT. No need for further evaluation, go ahead and apply! :)
Couldn't get a sense of your goals but here's my take- With 8+ years of experience you can either change your industry (outside automotive) to make your S&M skills transferable or change your function (from S&M to ops, strategy, product planning, etc.) but not both.
The other ones could be to continue within the same trajectory to become a Regional / Cateogry Head or get into automotive consulting (long shot).

Happy to have a chat in case of questions.

Cheers,
Manan

Hello neelgmat,

You have got everything you need to apply to a top B school in India. Anything about 670+ will put you in a comfortable spot to get an interview call.

Undoubtedly you have great experience in leading teams , supply - chain, operations, planning and training etc. I think it will important to pick the industry / function and role you would want to work on post MBA.

There have been some great success stories of people with your kind of background getting into key roles in the corporate sector. Having a very clear next step will make a lot of difference to put in a strong application.

All the best! Please let me know if you need any help.

Hi Shree,

Thanks a lot for your comments. You were quite generous while praising my profile, thanks :)
And as far as the preferred role goes, I am inclined towards Operations/Strategy/Planning/Project Management or similar roles. I'll be glad if you can deliberate on the success stories you mentioned and suggest something that brings more clarity to my future aspirations. Also would you suggest some top international B schools that fit my background and future goals?? I haven't really researched on the schools abroad yet.

Thanks & Regards
Neel
