Official Solution:

Learning environment’s efficiency is determined by learning methods supported. What makes the difference is not the technology itself, but rather, the learning methods enabled and supported by the technology. The main learning theories are objectivism and constructivism. Objectivism is a teacher-centered learning method whose goal is to represent and transfer objective realities from the teachers to the learners. An objectivist environment supports the passive learning methods, in which the learners are passive recipients of instruction, acquiring common understanding from teachers, rather creating their own knowledge. In contrast with objectivism, constructivism is learner centered. In a constructivist environment, learners can control their learning paces. The role of teacher is to assist the learners in constructing their own knowledge.
Web-based virtual online classroom (WVOC) is designed in two components. Instructional communicating environment (ICE) is mainly used to transfer learning materials and promote teachers and learners to interact instantly. To improve interactivity, ICE also provides some efficient tools such as chat-room, bulletin board systems etc. Collaborative learning environment (CLE) encourages learners to explore and communicate freely. This environment provides for learners some other learning tools such as lecture video, chat-room, contextual discussing forums, frequently asked questions (FAQ) etc.

The following can be deduced form the information given in the passage:

A. CLE provides a more efficient learning environment for the students than ICE does.
B. Teachers would prefer the ICE system to CLE system.
C. WVOC has a tool to transmit live feedback back and forth.
D. Students who prefer self study would not be interested in WVOC.
E. WVOC would be a successful product since it integrates both learning theories..

(A) The efficiencies of the different systems are not compared.

(B) Teachers’ preference is not discussed in the passage.

(C) Correct. ICE component of WVOC has a tool with which teachers and students can interact instantly.

(D) Students’ interest has not been discussed in the passage.

(E) The business aspect of WVOC has not been mentioned in the passage.

Answer: C

This does not explain why c is the correct answer. please explain.

The tool here refers to the chat room which enables live feedback back and forth.

I think this is a poor-quality question and I don't agree with the explanation. There is nothing mentioning "Live Feedback" in the question. Even thought the passage mentions the "chat-learning materials and promote teachers and learners to interact instantly", it is not exactly a "live feedback".

D makes much more sense

Think on comparing C and E - C is a better and clearer option

I don’t quite agree with the solution. "a tool to transmit live feedback" can be understood as "a tool made to transmit live feedback" and nothing about feedback is mentioned. Also, the passage only talks about interacting instantly without specifying. For all we know, the tool could be made to ask questions only, and feedback could be forbidden. One could see why: live feedback in front of everybody may not be the most constructive thing to do for the person to whom the feedback is give, and it may be a waste of time for the spectators. So I disagree that the text implies that there is a tool to transmit live feedback back and forth

Hi,
That's a good point!

In RC, instant interaction using chat rooms reasonably implies real-time two-way responses, and we are not allowed to assume hidden restrictions like feedback being prohibited unless the passage suggests them.

Why the other options don't work:
  • A: No comparison of efficiency is made
  • B: Teacher preference is never mentioned
  • D: CLE explicitly supports self-directed learners
  • E: "Successful product" is a value judgment not supported by the text

Hope this helps!
