Please explain how to eliminate B here

The original sentence provides us with a list on why Khan academy is a success, or rather what it proves.

B on the other hand changes the meaning and tells us what makes online learning more effective. There are no errors in B besides it changing the meaning.

E preserves the meaning of the original sentence, and is hence correct.

Hope this helps.

Hello experts

Is there any sure shot way to eliminate option B here. I am not convinced that the intended meaning of the author is to provide us with a list of why Khan Academy is a success.

B and E are both grammatically correct. In cases in which there are more than one gramatically correct choices one should select the option that conveys the meaning of the original sentence. Here E does so.

The success of Khan Academy proves that learning online is much more effective online and students’ preference is to learn at their own pace.

A- learning online is much more effective online and students' preference is
B- learning online is much more effective as students prefer
C- to learn online is much more effective since students preferring
D-online learning is more effective with students’ preference
E- learning online is much more effective and that students prefer

Hello guys!

In the following question, we can come across options which can be accurate but the best shall be the OA based on SC rules.

Eliminate Option A, the word 'online' is repeated, it is unrequired as we already register the meaning in 'learning online', so drop this.
Let's come to Option B later as it seems fine right now.
Eliminate Option C, verb-ing does not seem fine to me in this sentence.
Eliminate Option D, noun as an antecedent for 'to learn' seems incorrect.
Option E also seems fine!

Between Option B and Option E,
Option B here fails to use the parallelism of 'that.....that'

Option E correctly uses it and is the winner!

Hope this helps you! GMAT0010 and darn

Official Answer:- Option E

Thank you!

Option B and E are grammatically correct but option B changes the meaning.
Option B says - Success of Khan academy proves ... (something) ... because students prefer to learn at their own pace.

Original sentence doesn't mention "students prefer to learn at their own pace" as the reason but mentions it as the 2nd proven activity.

Clearly option E is the answer.
Success of Khan academy proves that X and that Y

Dear Friends,

Here is a detailed explanation to this question-
haardiksharma
The success of Khan Academy proves that learning online is much more effective online and students’ preference is to learn at their own pace.
A- learning online is much more effective online and students' preference is
B- learning online is much more effective as students prefer
C- to learn online is much more effective since students preferring
D-online learning is more effective with students’ preference
E- learning online is much more effective and that students prefer

Meaning is crucial to solving this problem:
Understanding the intended meaning is key to solving this question; the intended meaning of this sentence is that the success of Khan Academy proves that learning online is much more effective and that students prefer to learn at their own pace.

Concepts tested here: Meaning + Awkwardness/Redundancy

A: This answer choice alters the meaning of the sentence through the clause "learning online is much more effective online"; the construction of this phrase illogically and redundantly implies that learning online is much more effective when it is done; the intended meaning is that learning online learning is much more effective than traditional learning. Further, Option A uses the passive voice construction "students' preference is", leading to awkwardness and redundancy.

B: This answer choice alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase "as students prefer"; the use of "as" incorrectly implies that the success of Khan Academy proves that learning online is much more effective because students prefer to learn at their own pace; the intended meaning is that the success of Khan Academy proves that earning online is much more effective, and as a separate action students prefer to learn at their own pace.

C: This answer choice fails to form a complete sentence; as "preferring" is a present participle, there is no active verb to act upon the subject noun "students". Further, Option C uses the needlessly wordy construction "to learn online", leading to awkwardness and redundancy.

D: This answer choice alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase "with students’ preference; the use of "with" incorrectly implies that the success of Khan Academy proves that learning online is much more effective if students prefer to learn at their own pace; the intended meaning is that the success of Khan Academy proves that earning online is much more effective, and as a separate action students prefer to learn at their own pace.

E: This answer choice acts upon the independent noun "students" with the active verb "prefer" to form a complete thought, leading to a complete sentence. Further, Option E uses the phrase "and that students prefer", conveying the intended meaning - that the success of Khan Academy proves that learning online is much more effective and that students prefer to learn at their own pace. Additionally, Option E is free of any awkwardness or redundancy.

Hence, E is the best answer choice.

All the best!

HOW COULD WE KNOW the meaning intended ?
How do we know that the success of Khan Academy proves that learning online is much more effective and that students prefer to learn at their own pace.
It could also be that the success of Khan Academy proves that learning online is much more effective as/because students prefer to learn at their own pace. (nothing illogical here)

So why the 1st one is the right intended meaning and not the 2nd one which is answer B,

Thank you so much

Hello Fido10,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, Option A conveys that students preferring to learn at their own pace is a separate action that is proven by the success of Khan Academy; thus, Option E is superior to Option B, as it is more in line with the meaning conveyed by the original sentence.

We hope this helps.
All the best!

I dont get it. Option E says - The success of Khan Academy proves that students prefer to learn at their own pace? Does that make sense?

I personally selected E because, to me, the effectiveness of online learning and the student prefrences are two separate things. Kind of like saying "the success of coca cola proves that people like sugar and that people like fizzy drinks". They are two separate things. It could be the case that online learning is more effective, but that students don't like it or vice versa. Because of this, I picked E over than B.
