B Lake Titicaca has the most volume of water of any lake in South America
D The Lake Titicaca has the most volume of water of any lake in South America

The only difference is the use of " the " in D
I am not sure why D is incorrect .

I'm not sure, but I believe GMAT doesn't test the use of articles. I have never seen any official question testing this rule.

The Lake Titicaca has the most volume of the water of any lake in South America, making it the largest lake on that continent.

a) The Lake Titicaca has the most volume of the water of any lake in South America
b) Lake Titicaca has the most volume of water of any lake in South America
c) Lake Titicaca has the most volume of a water of each lake in South America
d) The Lake Titicaca has the most volume of water of any lake in South America
e) Lake Titicaca has the most volume of water of some lakes in South America

The only difference between B and D is "The" at the beginning. Does the GMAT test usage of articles? Please enlighten :)

B and D is confusing but while answering, Just THE needs to be taken care of.
Also, too much THE in D makes it wordy and less concise.

Hi All,
This question is from GMAT club grammar book.

'The' is used where you have to give stress or you are using superlative degree.

Quote:
The Lake Titicaca has the most volume of the water of any lake in South America,

in this sentence first The is not required as we are not giving stress on Lake Titicaca
second The is required as this is attached to superlative word 'most' in this sentence.

hope this clarifies you.

As long as there is only one lake called Lake Titicaca in South America, I do not think it matters much whether you call it simply lake or the lake.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but Lake Ticitaca is a proper noun because it's a specific place.
You wouldn't say "The Bob ate some food", you would say "Bob ate some food".

Hello Everyone,

In the GMAT grammar book the rule says:

Some / Any

Some is used before the complement in a positive/affirmative sentence, while any is used before the complement in a negative sentence.
EX: I want some coffee. I don’t want any coffee.

Here the sentence is positive so why do we have to use "Any" and not "Some"

Thanks

"some" here is not being used in the same way as your example. "Bigger than SOME lakes" is a comparison, where as "I want some coffee" is a description of value/amount.
Also, "most" is a superlative. If Lake Tictaca has the MOST water, then it has more water than ALL the lakes, not just SOME lakes. It's illogical otherwise.

"Some" in this context is 100% incorrect.
