Hi, I would like to share my experience and ask for an advice.
After 2-3 days of light preparation (using free resources) I did the 1st mock and got 159 (IR 15 / Q 13 / V 11). Then I purchased official GMAC materials and spent a few days on doing sample questions. Unfortunately, due to other commitments, I had to abandon my preparation, and start from scratch a few weeks later.
When I restarted, I spent 3-4 days on really intense preparation (e.g. doing 100 V questions one day and 100 Q the next day, trying to understand my mistakes). I did the 2nd and 3rd mocks on two consecutive days - got 161 (IR 13 / Q 18 / V 10) and 165 (IR 14 / Q 18 / V 13) respectively. I was negatively surprised by the IR scores (practice questions usually seemed easy to me), and very positively surpised by the Q scores. Relatively low scores in V were expected - I am not a native English speaker, and have never lived abroad. Improving those results significantly over a short period of time would be difficult.
I decided to spend a week on targeted preparation, i.e.:
- IR - didn't work on that at all - I knew that if I don't rush through this section, I can score well
- Q - repeatedly reviewed my previous mistakes and tried to memorize key mathematical formulas
- V - focused on SC - mostly using grammar book found on this forum (it's a great resource! IIRC I improved from like 50-60% correct to 90%+ correct in SC)
In the meantime I've signed up for the actual tests. The availaiblity of appointments in my city was limited - either ~2 weeks or ~4 weeks after restarting my preparation. I decided to pick the earlier date.
Unfortunately, about two days before the test I got sick, and had a dillema whether to go or reschedule. Eventually I decided to go (mostly due to limited availability mentioned above). During the test I felt that my performance is suboptimal - I had difficulty focusing, and hardly managed to answer all questions in time (whereaas during mocks I had typically 10 mins left in both IR and V, and 2-3 mins left in Q). I scored 165 (IR 18 / Q 14 / V 13), which is a good score, but at the same time I feel it's below my full potential. I had the same mock score after the initial preparation for about ~1 week in total, and there is no improvement from the additional week of focused preparation (while doing practice questions I could really see that improvement).
I am now thinking whether it makes sense to re-take the test. 170 should be within my reach - I've already achieved IR 18 in the actual test, and Q 18 twice in the mock tests. Improving V to 18 would be difficult, but 14-15 / 1-3 mistakes should be feasible (I feel now quite confident with SC, but with other questions it's worse - sometimes not knowing the meaning of a certain word can make it difficult to answer the whole question).
Do you think improving from 165 to 170+ would make a difference from the perspective of admission commitees? Or it's better now to spend time on the overall quality of application? The programs I consider are Stanford MSx and MIT SFMBA. I will appreciate your advice!
