D. Smokers needs to be plural to match the pronoun their and for some reason needs to be used instead of somehow because we know how just not the reason why.

D is more concise. We don't really need to say "many of the smokers" because saying "many smokers" is clear already and shorter. E ist a grammatically correct sentence, but we want to choose the best answer overall, which is D.

B. somehow came as a surprise to the smoker - somehow refers to "in some way; by some means" however the sentence intends to show a surprise faced by the smokers, therefore some reason(conveys that one does not know the reason for a particular situation, often with the implication that one finds it strange or surprising) is correct usage
C. for some reason was surprising to a smoker- smoker must be smokers as the sentence discusses in general about smokers
D. for some reason came as a surprise to many smokers- Bingo!
