Even if the recession plays out as expected, the troubled investments would continue to sour, eroding banks' profits and hampering their ability to lend.

(A) would continue to sour, eroding banks' profits and hampering
(B) would continue souring, eroding banks' profits, and hampering
(C) will continue to sour, eroding banks' profits and hampering
(D) will continue to sour, eroding banks' profits and to hamper
(E) will continue to sour, to erode banks' profits, and to hamper

If "simple present tense", then "simple present or future tense". A and B out.
D is out because eroding and hampering are verb-ing modifiers which are not parallel.
E is out because troubled investments will not erode bank's profit or hamper their ability to lend but the action of troubled investment continuing to sour will do the two tasks. In other words, eroding and hampering are modifying the action entity and not the noun "troubled investments".

C is the right answer.

Mistook verb for "expected" when it should be "plays".

A & B can be eliminated since "IF" = simple present, "THEN" = will

D & E are easy eliminations since "eroding" and "hampering" are verb-ing modifiers modifying the preceding the clause "the troubled investments would continue to sour"

Shame I mistook the verb. :/

Is this sentence structure correct? -
Even if the recession plays out as expected, the troubled investments will continue to sour, erode banks' profits, hampering their ability to lend?

What I am trying to mean by above is - Troubled investments will continue to sour and erode banks; profits which in turn will hamper ability of the banks to lend?

or it could be -
Even if the recession plays out as expected, the troubled investments will continue to sour and erode banks' profits, hampering their ability to lend.

Please advise

what is "their" referring to? banks or investments? there is no possessive pronoun introduced prior to "their". I said C because it makes the most logical sense, but could easily have been E
