Manitoba’s famed Narcisse Snake Dens habitat is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating networks of small caves that can be entered through sinkholes.

(A) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating networks
they is plural but the subject habitat is singular

(B) appeals to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground and created networks
same as a

Let’s take a look at splits:

1. Split: is appealing to / appeals to

Both mean be attractive or interesting (Cambridge Dictionary).

The idea appealed to him.
The idea is appealing to him.

Or:

The habitat appeals to snakes.
The habitat is appealing to snakes.

All are correct and thus no decision on this split.

2. Split: reasons that it / reasons that they / reasons that

a. Let’s first identify the original meaning:

The reason that the habitat drove away many farmers is that the habitat’s thin topsoil sits on top of eroded limestone (bad conditions for farming). For the same reason the habitat is appealing to (appeals to) snakes.

We can rewrite this sentences as follows:

The habitat is appealing to (appeals to) snakes for the same reasons that it (the habitat) drove away many farmers: its (the habitat’s) thin topsoil sits on top of eroded limestone.

Here colon (:) is used to introduce the reason why the habitat is appealing to snakes and why it drove away many farmers. Note that its after colon hints that we need it after reasons - reasons that it.

b. What if we say reasons that they as A and B do? they may refer to either snakes or reasons. We can change they for both and check the meaning.

...reasons that snakes drove away many farmers... not snakes but the habitat itself drove away many farmers because conditions for farming are bad.
...reasons that reasons drove away many farmers... reasons themselves can’t drive away farmers. For some reasons farmers can be driven away, and these reasons are not reasons themselves but bad conditions.

Thus A and B are out.

c. What if we say reasons that as E does?

...reasons that drove away many farmers... again, reasons themselves can’t drive away farmers. For some reasons farmers can be driven away, and these reasons are not reasons themselves but bad conditions.

Thus E is out.

3. Split: a network of small caves / networks of small caves

We usually say a network of small caves. We can eliminate options basing on word choice only when more blatant errors have already been sorted out. However, word choice still may give a small hint that there may be something wrong with a particular option.

4. Split:

A and C. ...limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating networks (a network) of small caves...

What does create a network of small caves? generis, RonPurewal, GMATGuruNY say that comma + ing refers to the nearest preceding verb and its subject.

In other words, comma + creating refers to the nearest verb eroded and its subject water. Hence, water has eroded limestone and thereby created a network of small caves underground. That is completely logical.

B. ...limestone that water has gradually eroded underground and created... grammatically ok but illogical because second parallel element creates nonsense with the root phrase:

...limestone that water has gradually eroded... meaning is ok
...limestone that water has gradually created... nonsense because water didn’t create limestone but eroded it. B is out.

D. ...its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground and creates a network...

This part of the sentence illogically means that thin topsoil creates a network of caves. That’s not true. D is out.

E. ...its thin topsoil, sitting on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creates networks...

If nonessential modifier is removed, then, like D, E means that thin topsoil creates a network of caves. That’s not true. E is out.

Hence C

(A) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating networks
- They drove- habitat is singular so cannot use they .Hence Eliminate A

(B) appeals to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground and created networks

- again THEY is used for singular habitat- Hence Eliminate B

(C) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating a network

Correct

(D) appeals to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers years ago: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground and creates a network

-last part of underline portion " and creates a network" changes the meaning second part of the sentence wants to convey.Hence eliminate option D

(E) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that drove away many farmers years ago: its thin topsoil, sitting on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creates networks

pronoun is missing to make meaning clear + creates network is incorrect in last part- Eliminate E

Answer - C

Option A - Pronoun ambiguity (they)
Option B - Pronoun ambiguity (they)
Option C - wait
Option D - why to add " years ago ". Also thin top soil creates the network or eroded underground does is the question ?
Option E - same as D

Hence , I would go with C.

Looking at the question, we must first determine what drove away the farmers? The habitat? The snakes? or the Reasons?
We have a "that" acting as a pronoun and it will refer to the previous "singular" noun. So it cannot be the "snakes" or the "reasons". It is the habitat that drove away the farmers.

Let's look at the answers by POE:

(A) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating networks
Pronoun error. "they" is a wrong pronoun for "habitat".

(B) appeals to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground and created networks
Same error as A. Also, the effect that networks are created because water gradually eroding the limestone is missing.

(C) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating a network
Corrects the errors. Hold.

(D) appeals to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers years ago: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground and creates a network
"creates" is wrong verb usage. The topsoil cannot create the network by itself.

(E) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that drove away many farmers years ago: its thin topsoil, sitting on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creates networks
Changes the meaning. Says the thin topsoil is creating the network, not the process of erosion.

Answer (C)

SC QUESTIONS:
Manitoba’s famed Narcisse Snake Dens habitat is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating networks of small caves that can be entered through sinkholes.

Let's analyse the choice.

(A) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating networks
The word "they" mistakenly refers to snakes, but the intended meaning is that the Snake Dens habitat drove away many farmers.

(B) appeals to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground and created networks
[b] Same pronoun issue as in (A). Furthermore, the sentence does not convey the intended meaning: here, water has eroded... and created... . It sounds illogical that water has created a network of small caves.

(C) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating a network
Correct answer. This choice is grammatically correct and conveys the intended meaning unambiguously

(D) appeals to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers years ago: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground and creates a network
Although the sentence is grammatically correct, it has meaning issue: here, its thin topsoil sits... and creates.... It sounds illogical that the thin topsoil creates a network of small caves.

(E) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that drove away many farmers years ago: its thin topsoil, sitting on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creates networks
Same meaning issue as in (D) . It sounds nonsensical that the thin topsoil creates a network of small caves.

Manitoba’s famed Narcisse Snake Dens habitat is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating networks of small caves that can be entered through sinkholes.

Here's my train of thot:

Subject in green above
Split 1 - SV Agreement - "Narcisse Snake Dens Habitat" is singular - It refers to one Habitat - Manitoba's
(A) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating networks
(B) appeals to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground and created networks

Let's get one thing straight, the limestone was eroded by water -> This act created networks of small caves. The creation of small caves was not a secondary reason.
For this reason, eliminate
(D) appeals to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers years ago: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground and creates a network
(E) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that drove away many farmers years ago: its thin topsoil, sitting on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creates networks

(C) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating a network

Based on my understanding - Answer: C

I don't fully agree with this example though because there is really only one "reason" given, not "reasons" - for this reason I have my suspicions (E) might be the answer. I'm teetering to be honest.

Manitoba’s famed Narcisse Snake Dens habitat is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating networks of small caves that can be entered through sinkholes.

Here, "Narcisse Snake Dens habitat" is singular. So "...that they drove..." is incorrect (SVA). A, B can be eliminated.

(C) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating a network.

"...sits.....,creating..." is correct (cause-effect). C is the correct answer.

(D) appeals to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers years ago: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground and creates a network.

In D, "...sits...,creates..." is logically not sound and it also doesn't show the "create" part as an effect of "sits" part. So, D is Incorrect.

(E) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that drove away many farmers years ago: its thin topsoil, sitting on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creates networks

"...sitting....., creates..." is incorrect (cause-effect is reversed). E can be eliminated.

Manitoba’s famed Narcisse Snake Dens habitat is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating networks of small caves that can be entered through sinkholes.

Meaning:

1. There is Manitoba’s famed Narcisse Snake Dens habitat
2. This habitat is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers
3. Its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating networks of small caves that can be entered through sinkholes

The main issue with this question is to get intended meaning correctly. Then you will be able to find correct pronouns-antecedents, SV-agreement.

SV agrees in number, but questionable thing is here -Verb tense.

Present continuous VS Present simple

Given sentence presents general information, we don't need to state any action that is happening currently right now.
Hence 'is appealing" is incorrect here.

Next pronoun 'they' what is antecedent? By logic 'they' has to refer to 'habitat' but it is singular.
So we have pronoun-antecedent agreement error.

POE

So we can straight away eliminate (A), (C) and (E)

(A) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating networks

(C) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating a network
(as in (A) incorrect verb tense, v-ing - creating - preceded by comma modifies preceding clause and make sense)

(E) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that drove away many farmers years ago: its thin topsoil, sitting on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creates networks
(as in (A) incorrect verb tense, and two verbs don't connected properly "is appealing" and "creates")

We left with (B) and (D):

But (B) maintains pronoun-antecedent agreement error.

(B) appeals to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground and created networks

(D) appeals to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers years ago: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground and creates a network

(A) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating networks
they incorrectly refer to Manitoba’s famed Narcisse Snake Dens habitat, which is a singular subject

(B) appeals to snakes for the same reasons that they drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground and created networks
appeals to -is wrong here.... it conveys the intent of habitat, which is non-living(conveying the meaning that habitat is making the request to snakes)
so to+verb is wrong here.......they incorrectly refer to habitat, which is singular

(C) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating a network
appealing is correct here-conveys meaning that habitat is attractive.............it correctly refers to habitat
reasons mentioned why this habitat is attractive to snakes. ( : is used to provide what logically follows from the sentence and used here
to mention one of the reasons)

(D) appeals to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers years ago: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground and creates a network
appeals to-is wrong here for the same reason discussed in option (B)

(E) is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that drove away many farmers years ago: its thin topsoil, sitting on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creates networks
it changes the intended meaning of the sentence--it says reasons that drove away many farmers years ago and reasons that make the habitat appealing are same
also after semicolon there should be reasons

C is the answer

Hello! I think there might be a grammatical error in the correct answer choice (C):
"is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers..."

The following phrasing, which is grammatically correct (available in answer choice E), would considerably improve the sentence:
"for the same reasons that drove"

Hello, GDT. Well done on a tough question. If we take a look at (C) under the microscope, we will see that both it and its refer to the same basic noun, habitat. I say basic noun because you could consider Narcisse Snake Dens habitat a singular entity. First, the sentence:

Manitoba’s famed Narcisse Snake Dens habitat is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that it drove away many farmers: its thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating a network of small caves that can be entered through sinkholes.

You can check either interpretation of its from above, but I prefer the simpler version:

1) Manitoba’s famed Narcisse Snake Dens habitat is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that the habitat drove away many farmers: the habitat's thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating a network of small caves that can be entered through sinkholes.

2) Manitoba’s famed Narcisse Snake Dens habitat is appealing to snakes for the same reasons that the Narcisse Snake Dens habitat drove away many farmers: the Narcisse Snake Dens habitat's thin topsoil sits on top of limestone that water has gradually eroded underground, creating a network of small caves that can be entered through sinkholes.

I hope that helps clarify the issue.
