A. a large number of the teacher's student were in his class the previous year.
Does not prove anything why the teacher is biased —> Wrong

B. many teachers find it difficult to be objective when assigning grades to male and female students.
Generalise first all teachers, and indirectly strengthens the fact that teacher is not biased —> Wrong

C. the evidence shows that more than 92% of the female students should have received a passing grade.
The argument needs to be flawed against the allocation of higher grades rather than passing grades. Also, we don’t know more than 92 can be 93, 94 or 100 percent also. For 93/94 percent we can’t conclude that teacher is biased —> wrong

D. the majority of tests written by female students and that have been rechecked by another teacher were given a higher grade by the second teacher.
Since, re-evaluation by second teacher results higher grade to ALL the female students, clearly first teacher has intentionally gave lower grades to female students and is biased towards male students in grades —> Correct

E. the teacher is biased against female students in the case of only some of the subjects he teachers.
Since we don’t know how many subjects, we cannot prove whether teacher is biased towards male students or not —> Wrong

IMO Option D

C. the evidence shows that more than 92% of the female students should have received a passing grade.....clearly shows the evidence that the teacher is in favour of male students by reducing marks of female students

But the record showed that 92% of the female students received a passing grade in this teacher's class. The argument above is flawed in that it ignored the possibility that

ARGUMENT
[prem] Parents argue that the teacher is biased and favors higher grades to males;
[prem] But 92% of females received passing grades;
[con] Based on this record, the teacher is not biased;
[asum] What if more females should have received a passing grade?

A. a large number of the teacher's student were in his class the previous year.....It doesn't matters whether the students were in previous class or not.
B. many teachers find it difficult to be objective when assigning grades to male and female students........diffuculties faced by teachers while assigning grades is OFS.
C. the evidence shows that more than 92% of the female students should have received a passing grade........Already given in the passage and doesnot reflect any flaw.
D. the majority of tests written by female students and that have been rechecked by another teacher were given a higher grade by the second teacher.....Correct option, as it shows that the same students have received higher grades and hence the teacher is bias towards male students. So the reasoning given in the passage that 92% female students received passing grades holds untrue.
E. the teacher is biased against female students in the case of only some of the subjects he teachers.......It is not mentioned in the passage of any particular of bias. The passage tells that the teacher is bias in general. Hence this option is out.

IMO D.

The right answer is option C in my view.

Premise 1: Parents claim that a teacher is not objective and favors male students with higher grades.
Counter Premise 1: Records show that 92% received a passing grade in the teacher's class.
Conclusion: The teacher has not discriminated against women when assigning grades.

Is it possible that the teacher could pass more than 92% of the females in the class? If there is evidence to suggest that more than 92% of the female students should have received a passing grade for their work, then the argument is flawed. On the other hand, if 92% or less of the female students were determined externally to receive passing grades, then the argument is strengthened.

Option C states that 92% of the female students should have received a passing grade. If this is true, then the argument above is flawed, since there is evidence to suggest that more than 92% of the female students should have received a passing grade from the teacher.

Option D states that the majority of the tests written by the female students received higher scores when they were rechecked by a second teacher. Although this is tempting, this is not the best answer. First of all, the teacher accused of discrimination gave 92% of the female students a passing grade. So, if majority, which is more than 50% of the female students, receive higher scores, it does not necessarily mean than more than 92% had higher marks, which could call the objectivity of the accused teacher into question.

Imo. D

Premise: Parents of some of the children in a particular class have claimed that the teacher is not objective and favors his male students with higher grades.
Counter premise: But the record showed that 92% of the female students received a passing grade in this teacher's class.
Conclusion: This record demonstrates that the teacher has not discriminated against women when assigning grades.

There is a gap in the counter premise. What if the same test papers checked by another teacher and he gives more marks to the female students. So, the conclusion, that the teacher has not discriminated against women when assigning grades, is weakened.

The argument above is flawed in that it ignored the possibility that

A. a large number of the teacher's student were in his class the previous year. - Out of scope.
B. many teachers find it difficult to be objective when assigning grades to male and female students. - Out of scope.
C. the evidence shows that more than 92% of the female students should have received a passing grade. - Tempting, it says more female students must have received passing grade, but premise indicates that teacher assigns more grade to male students than female students. Hence, this option does not weakens the conclusion.
D. the majority of tests written by female students and that have been rechecked by another teacher were given a higher grade by the second teacher. - If this scenario happened, then conclusion is weakened as teacher has discriminated against women. So, this possibility is ignored in the argument.
E. the teacher is biased against female students in the case of only some of the subjects he teachers. - Irrelevant

Competition Mode Question

Parents of some of the children in a particular class have claimed that the teacher is not objective and favors his male students with higher grades. But the record showed that 92% of the female students received a passing grade in this teacher's class. This record demonstrates that the teacher has not discriminated against women when assigning grades.

The argument above is flawed in that it ignored the possibility that

A. a large number of the teacher's student were in his class the previous year.
B. many teachers find it difficult to be objective when assigning grades to male and female students.
C. the evidence shows that more than 92% of the female students should have received a passing grade.
D. the majority of tests written by female students and that have been rechecked by another teacher were given a higher grade by the second teacher.
E. the teacher is biased against female students in the case of only some of the subjects he teachers.

Official Explanation

Correct Answer: C

The best answer is C. The flaw in the argument is that it assumes erroneously that a large percentage of female students who pass this teacher's class demonstrates absence of discriminatory behavior against women on the part of the teacher who gave the grade. Choice E exposes this flaw by pointing out that the judge may well have failed to pass a female student in cases where evidence shows that the student should have passed.

Okay, so A, B and E being eliminated, the confusion remains between C and D. Both seems good enough but let's take a closer look. Choice C implies that more female students should have passed and hence the teachrr is gender biased. D says tat in majority of the "tests" taken which when recheked by a second teacher gave more grades to them. Bit tat doesnt give a clear statistics. 51% and 99%?
Hence C.
