I wholeheartedly agree with you. It seems AWA would be a perfect take-home assignment.

But it also looks like they will be using a different set of questions for this test (since it does not count towards the annual or lifetime limit and cannot be retaken) so they may optimize questions that don’t require as much scratch paper work... though still, I found it very helpful for Berbal to have ABCDE on it....

isaacnewton1234
Honestly the AWA is the only section that would have seamlessly transitioned to an at-home test format and they cut the section out. I get the AWA isn’t as important as the others, but how is anybody supposed to take quant/verbal/IR with an online whiteboard anyways?? An AWA score would be the only comparable score coming out of this situation.

Question: Was anyone able to successfully register and schedule their Online GMAT?
Unfortunately Yes!
Before I found out about online whiteboard fantasy they came up with, I was even ready to purchase Win 10 to comply with system requirements, as they don't accept Win 7 that I have. Thanks for the "solution" GMAC anyways...

Hello
even i am little spectacle about this interim gmat.
it would be great if you help a littlebb
1)using this desktop feature to take notes will not affect our speed?
after all you have select the white board option and pen/pencil/shape/text option before writing/drawing anything on the board.
Erase it to solve other question. Consider a quant problem where combination of numbers, text and shapes is used. One has to select text to write one line ,then select a shape to draw. Then how will i label the sides of the triangle i have drawn? or make any notes on the diagram itself or shade a portion of diagram if needed. Some time and comfort level will be lost in doing all of it.
will this not affect our solving speed?
2)also, since now we had option to select the order of section in actual gmat, which we do not have in this interim gmat format. Do you think this change matters? Because otherwise i would have selected verbal and then quant. So does this affect our performance?
thankyou in advance :)

1. Yes. It will affect your performance.
2. I am not sure that section order affects performance really. GMAT used to be fixed 3 years ago and then section order was introduced and supposedly it did not make it easier... so removing it may seem to be inconvenient but supposedly not harder.

bb thankyou so much for such a quick response.
So in general what is your suggestion-
should one register for this online exam considering the whiteboard shift and all other factors?
any important think one should keep in mind for both the options - i)delaying the exam ii)vs taking it online.
PS- I know these question do not a clear answer but since you are an expert your insight will help us to take decision.:)
Since gmat is such an exma where 1/2 ques and as lil as 5 min can make an impact of 10/20 pts on your score easily i think this is an important decision to take.
thankyou :)

If you have an option, I would wait. Usually waiting and time yield the most flexibility and the best options. I would at least let the dust settle and not register for a few weeks. That is of course if you have the time.

If you have been prepping for three or four months and you’re ready to be done with it and you just can’t stand the idea of studying and reviewing for another few weeks, I would register for the test and get it over with, hopefully.

If you are just starting out there in the middle of your prep, I would plan to take the test after the test centers open and do it in a more relaxed environment with a note board or marker board or whatever you wanna call it. Note however that nobody knows when the quarantine will end and therefore test centers may not reopen June 15. That’s just a tentative date. But we would likely know this in mid May or in about a month so you can make further adjustments to your study routine and schedule. At that time you could make a decision to either take the new GMAT or wait for the traditional one.

I think the biggest mistake one can make at this time is to rush into the new online GMAT, and bomb it, without an option to retake until test centers reopen.

Hi BB,
I had a small request to make.
if you get the change to speak to them or raise any questions, would you please be kind enough to raise the question below:

1. Most of us India are stuck in different places and may not have our passports with us. in such a situations, would a driving license, or a AADHAR card, or a Tax Identification (PAN) card work?

thanks a lot!

Thanks. I think identification requirements seem to be a pretty big concern among the test takers. Some have expired documents and others may not have it with them. I’ll ask.

Silly question - what if you have a touchscreen laptop? Can you use the touchscreen for the virtual whiteboard? I have a feeling they won't be able to restrict it technically (though the proctor may be able to do so verbally).... Any thoughts?
No, touch screens are not allowed. The information is buried in the website. If you go to System Requirements, then click the link meant for network administrators, you'll see that they mentioned that touch screens are not allowed on page 4.

Wait, am I missing something here? While I have an average score(710), I believe that this at-home version would be so much harder without any scratch paper. I mean people (especially @zhanbo) who are saying it would be an easy 800 are forgetting that easy scratch paper is the bread and butter for people doing Q49-51. How is one supposed to solve questions without anything to write on? That mouse tomfoolery, with the online board, does not work for us mortals-I am sorry.

Do you know if we can practice with the whiteboard before registering for the gmat online exam? I would like to see if I can get use to the whiteboard before spending 200 dollars + 30% off taxes in my country= 260 at least

I have not seen a whiteboard simulator from GMAC. I am expecting that there will be a whiteboard simulator within a week. It seems a pretty easy feature to enable for someone to test drive.... At least I would have done it if I were the GMAC :-)

P.S. I have found a Vue System Test here: https://home.pearsonvue.com/theopengroup/onvue
Click on Test My System
It does not give a whiteboard simulation but it does check your system and allows you to run a check of your ID

To answer your question however, no official whiteboard is available except a screenshot and spec sheet.

Completely stunned by this decision and now will either take the GRE or drive halfway across the country to take the GMAT in an area that is not shut down (I'm in Southern California)

- No scratch paper is absurd. Quant is my strong point and I have serious doubts about my ability to score decently on the virtual screen. I'd be willing to buy another webcam and point it directly at my scratch paper. Hard to believe they couldn't come up with a solution in 2020.

- no touch screen: Can this features be disabled for testing purposes? Both my personal and work computers are touch screens. Additionally, libraries are obviously closed at this time.

All this and you can't even cancel your score, which is the ultimate slap in the face given the fact that I don't know a single person that has ever prepared for this exam without using notepaper.

I think we need to push back on GMAC on this one.

EDIT: my intention was to inquire as to why we cant have a whiteboard or something similar. I understand the scratch paper policy of course.

People are crying because they can’t use paper on the gmat exam. The main problem is that if you take the exam with papers, then you can pass those exercises to somebody else. That’s why we are not allowed to use paper. And it’s quite understandable.

This is exactly the reason for not being able to use scratch paper.... And I would have agreed with this summary. However GRE allows use of a reasonable whiteboard. Why not adapt the same method and process for the next two months?
