Throughout My Career Spanning for more than 9 years of full time work experience with a Fortune 500 Company, I tried a number of times to complete My GMAT Prep and go through the Exam, but every time something or the other (More urgent) popped up which required more priority because of which I had to drop My GMAT Prep in between. But this time I was more than committed to My Prep, to reinforce my commitment I had joined 12-Weekend Classroom Sessions at a Reputed Educational Institute. I started with the Classroom Sessions in the Last weekend of Last Year and was very fortunate enough to complete the set of 12 Classes of Verbal and Quant Each just a Week before when Lockdown was Declared in the India. Before joining the Classroom Sessions I was only aware of
Manhattan GMAT Guides and had always been preparing through them. But after Joining the Classes got to know about other GMAT Materials. The Classes went well and used to spare at least an hour daily to studies along with full time work. Being from an engineering background it is always expected to score Q50-51, which I was also confident with. I knew had to work on my verbal and in all three sections. Through the classes I got to know unique ways to approach SC, CR and RC which helped me getting rid of low hanging fruits in quick time, so that I can devote more time to the tougher questions. Just as I was approaching to the end of the Classroom sessions I booked my Exam date for 13th June keeping in mind to give at least 10 mocks, Revise OG once and Revise the study material of classroom sessions. But as the Lockdown was announced everything went blurred and there were lot of uncertainties regarding everything, so much so that it took even GMAC almost a month to come out with the Online GMAT Format. While continuing my studies and managing work from home, that’s when I came across on different social networking sites links to various
WhatsApp Groups where people from around the globe, preparing for GMAT were connected. It has been a very useful platform to keep me motivated as well as network with people from different parts of the world and getting to know how they approach the GMAT Prep. Till before 3 Weeks from 13th June, the centres in my city were not opened, which made me feel very sceptical about the situations. That’s when I took advise from My coaches and peers and decided to postpone the exam date by 3 weeks to 04th July. As with most of the students I also purchased the GMAC official Mocks with a plan to attempt them once before the Exam. My scores ranged from 650-690 in the first attempt. Finally, on 4th of July I went on to appear for My 1st Attempt with all the nervousness and anxiety. I had decided If I score anything above 650 I will accept the scores. The experience was really good, though I was worried about wearing the mask throughout the whole exam time. I scored an average 660 (V32, Q49, IR8 and AWA5). After the Exam I did an analysis of the whole journey consulted few people and could infer that you perform the best on GMAT when you are at the peak of your preparations, which was certainly not the case for me after postponing the exam once. I started to work on applications after my first attempt. But the fire inside me always kept telling me that I am much better than this and pushing me to achieve a better score. Thus I decided to re-appear for the Exam and scheduled the appointment for 05th Sept. This time I scheduled my preparations in such a way that I should be at peak of My Preparations by 05th Sept. I started to work on strengthening on my weaknesses, revising classroom study materials, gave a second attempt to GMAC Official Mocks and a Free Mock from Kaplan, Veritas and
Expert’s Global. This time the scores Ranged from 680-710. Going into the exam I was feeling confident enough to get a score of atleast 700.
I always had a plan to appear for the Exam twice, even if I would have achieved a 700 or more on my first attempt I would have still gone for the second attempt in order to better it. As far as Exam Prep Material is concerned, My suggestions to all the readers of this post would be Stick to Material from one company and to only practice the official questions. Also not to ignore IR and AWA as it can be gamechanger during the admission process. Also towards the end of prep for my first attempt I discovered the GMATClub App, immediately installed it and started following the people who are most active on it (Bunuel, VeritasKarishma, ScottTargetTestPrep, BrentGMATPrepNow, CrackVerbalGMAT, YashikaAgrawal, GMATNinja, EGMATQuantExpert to Name a few) . This helped me a lot as I would be able to attempt 50-100 new question everyday ranging from 600 to 750 level. Also whenever these people would post their explanations for a certain question, reading those explanations helped me a lot.
Though I still feel that I am better than 700, but for now I plan to focus on R1 Applications for my target universities. I will definitely be going through my third attempt and this time I plan to attempt the online version. I will surely post my experience here. Good Luck.
