OFFICIAL EXPLANATIONProject SC Butler: Sentence Correction (SC2)
THE PROMPTQuote:
Very little
has the ability to grow in the Andean highlands of Peru due to the thin air, scarce water supply, and rocky terrain.
•
because, due to, and
because of→
Because is a subordinating conjunction that must be followed by a clause (a sentence with a subject and verb).
→
Due to and
because of are both prepositions that must be followed by nouns.
That said,
due to modifies nouns whereas
because of modifies verbs.
(If that last sentence is confusing, ignore it. I don't teach the issue this way, though I link to a post below that does so in Notes.
Instead, use "caused by.")
→
Due to is correct if you can replace the phrase with
caused by. If
caused by can replace
due to, then
due to is correct.
→ If
caused by does
not work,
because of almost certainly
will work. (I cannot think of a single exception.)
→
Because introduces
clauses of reason and connects dependent clauses to main clauses.
Because and
because of are heavily preferred to
due to on the GMAT.
Be highly suspicious of
due to.
THE OPTIONSQuote:
A)
has the ability to grow in the Andean highlands of Peru
due to •
has the ability to grow is a really long way to say:
can grow→ on your first pass, do
not eliminate options because you believe that they are "wordy."
Style questions are decided last.
•
due to is incorrect. To test the usage, replace "due to" with "caused by."
Fail.
Very little has the ability to grow caused by the thin air.
(We need a noun whose causality
due to can describe.
This option, corrected:
The scarcity of growing things in the highlands of Peru is due to thin air and little water.→ in my revised version, the noun
scarcity is correctly described by
due to: scarcity is caused by thin air and little water.)
ELIMINATE A
Quote:
B)
is able to grow in the Andean highlands of Peru
caused by •
caused by is incorrect
See option A.
•
is able to grow seems unnecessarily long compared to
can grow. The first error is fatal.
ELIMINATE B
Quote:
C) can grow in the Andean highlands of Peru because •
because is incorrect: it is not followed by a clause with a subject and a verb
• in fact, the sentence is incomplete.
Incomplete sentence:
Very little can grow ... in Peru . . . because thin air, scarce water supply, and rocky terrain. -- . . .
because thin air, etc.
do what?
-- a verb is missing, such as "together create an inhospitable environment for living organisms."
ELIMINATE C
Quote:
D) can grow in the Andean highlands of Peru
due to •
due to is incorrect
See option A.
ELIMINATE D
Quote:
E)
can grow in the Andean highlands of Peru
because of•
because of is used correctly.
→ we know that
due to does not work because
caused by does not work. That scenario means that
because of is virtually certain to work.
(Go check official questions. I've linked to two below. The pattern holds.)
→
because of modifies the verb
can grow by explaining why very little can grow
Remember: if
caused by fails,
because of will probably work.
•
can grow is short and clear
The answer is E.NotesDue to, because of, and
because are tested fairly frequently.
Due to is almost always wrong. (Offhand, I cannot think of a single official question in which "due to" is part of the correct answer.)
To repeat:
Because of, a preposition, must be followed by nouns.
Because, a subordinating
conjunction, must be followed by a clause containing a subject and a verb.

COMMENTSgauravmanu , welcome to SC Butler.
Every time I see one of these questions I am reminded of an article,
here, in
The Atlantic that initially made me indignant until Childish Gambino (a.k.a. Donald Glover) came out with
Because the Internet—but his was the only example of
because as a [faux] "preposition" that I found interesting. Or tolerable./end random aside
I am glad to to see "many paths to the waterfall" described in these answers.
Future aspirants, read the thread: you'll see a few different ways to take this SC question down.
Well done, everyone.
