However, I am just a student is some corner of the world that I want to take my GMAT focus via online.........that problem should not be there IMHO

Hello... Had a qq - for the focus edition Verbal.. would we know if we will know the number of questions under a particular RC?

Hi. No. I think we will continue to have reading comprehension passages with 3 to 4 questions each. However, usually passages with three questions are shorter. I can usually tell a three question passage from the four question passage, usually…

PS. You should expect for reading comprehension passages but there are some rare situations when you will see only three.

Which passage will have at least three questions and potentially up to four. You will not know how many questions a particular passage will have. However potentially you can use the feature that allows you to come back and change the answer… 3 times, after you submit the last question. But I’m still trying to figure out the best use of that feature… 🤔

RahulJain293 bb I have some more specific data on RC and other question types below, from 4 focus edition practice tests. I've also included a comparison table of the question type weighting for classic vs focus edition.

One slight difference between classic GMAT and focus edition:
    -On classic GMAT, I'd almost always see 13 RC questions: 1 passage with 4 questions, 3 passages with 3 questions
    -On focus edition, on 4 practice tests, 3 of them had 14 questions (including 2 passages with 4 questions), 1 of them had 13 questions

I know a person who took 10 tests and they observed quite a variance with RC. 9 out of 10 times they had 4 RC passages with 14-16 questions.
1 time they had 3 RC passages only with 12 questions. So it seems there is a variance or some kind of flexibility that is not just random.

Wow, that amount of variance is interesting and surprising, especially since that would mean between 7 to 11 CR questions, which is quite a wide range.

Every ESR for the classic GMAT had the same number of verbal questions counted, with 8 CR, 10 RC, and 12 SC. It will interesting to see what the analytics look like for focus edition.

Update: today I was given the option to register for the classic GMAT on March 1st, 2024—which suggests that a firm end date for the current exam has not yet been set.





So far, we have only confirmed the functionality of the test-center GMAT Focus registration process, and that the new test officially begins on 11/7/23 (or 11/8?)—a little over two months from today.

Can anyone report having successfully registered for the GMAT Focus online? carcass, any luck yet?

Hi. It’s interesting you have some of this data already. Or at least feedback. I haven’t seen the points of this nature.

I don’t know that there’s a straight answer at this time but ever since the announcement of the new focus edition, there was a concern about time on the verbal section because it still has four reading comprehension passages which account for the majority of the questions. As the result ring apprehension contributes the most Value to the verbal score now and historically most people had difficulty with reading comprehension.

And not only most of the questions are now reading comprehension, they might’ve time you have to deal with the ring comprehension questions is no less. Usually people would solve sentence correction and critical reasoning in a minute or a minute and a half and then use the time towards reading comprehension. No you can’t really do that as much…. And finally, I feel sentence correction was the easier of the three question types on the Verbal.

So I would argue that yes verbal section did get harder but not because the questions are harder, instead because sentence correction was removed.

Hi Nik1007,

There are many ways an exam can become more difficult, but before we start speculating about a possible increase in the difficulty level of the Focus edition, let's look at the facts:

1. Both the GMAT and the GMAT Focus are adaptive exams. Although GMAC can add more questions (say, more high-difficulty questions) to the question pool, adaptive exams don't have a "difficulty level" as such.

2. Verbal percentile data show that GMAC expects many test takers to get higher absolute scores on the Focus edition than on the current GMAT.

3. Every score, including the total score, is associated with a percentile rank.

4. Test takers have spent a lot of time developing their quant and verbal skills, but both quant and verbal are less important on the Focus edition. Test takers who are also comfortable with DI (Data Insights, a mix of IR and basic quant and verbal DS) will find it easier to get a higher score on the Focus edition.

Hi Can,Will,

With each change to the GMAT (for example, when the At-home version of the Exam was created, when the Exam was shortened back in 2018, when IR was first added in 2012, etc.), Business Schools have been able to adjust their respective admissions processes to accomodate the fact that a certain number of Applicants would be applying with Scores from different versions of the Exam. The constant throughout all of that is that your GMAT Score (from whichever version of the Test you take) is valid for up to 5 years. Thus, as long as you apply to Business Schools within 5 years of your upcoming Test Date, you have nothing to worry about in regards to whether your Score will be accepted or not.

Since your Official Test Date is coming up, how have you been scoring on your CATs/mocks? And what is your overall Goal Score?

Hi AjiteshArun, your video was very informative (as always).

There is a portion in the video, wherein you discuss that in the Focus edition, a candidate's performance in one section has a bearing on the difficultly level of the first question in the next section that the candidate attempts.

Can you point me to the source of this information, so I can read it up further.
