both, I suppose. More for people who’ve finished interviewing and trying to reduce their odds of waitlist / ding

I was told this can be useful only in the case that the alum works/worked with you, not if he/she is a friend/relative/other

I’d say that makes sense - but say someone knows you professionally (client, indirect supervisor etc.) just writes a note saying they endorse your app and think you’ll be a good fit for the school maybe makes a 1% difference or a "tiebreaker"?

Couldn’t hurt to remember there is a possibility of receiving interview invites till November 20th. I’m sure there are people here who had CBS as a stretch school. Given that CBS has changed their process this year, it is important to remember they might still be figuring things out. so if your profile isn’t an obvious "Yes" maybe they’re waiting to see how some of the other interviews go and are going to decide for interviews after. That would also explain the long time gap between Vast majority on 31st October and all by 20th November. All speculation btw
