I just took the new GMAT Focus Edition.

I'll update this post a little later with a full debrief. In the meantime, please feel free to ask any questions you may have (particularly about the verbal section) here.

This message is a masterfully crafted teaser. It's time to debrief and put our curiosity to rest  .

Show us the movie, and let the suspense unravel!

Questions:

1. Apart from the pattern, did you see the questions evolve in the Focused edition?
2. Did the actual exam have any non-math DS questions? I remember reading some messages on the forum regarding this. If my memory serves me well, we were expecting a new question type around logical data sufficiency. Did you happen to encounter any of such questions?
3. Tips for time management - for both verbal and quant? What changes in strategies will you recommend w.r.t time management from the classical GMAT.
4. Lastly, which one is better exam - classic or focus? (To be read as - Is Focused Ed. tougher than the classical GMAT ;) )

Hi Ajitesh, hope your exam went well :)

Am sitting mine on Monday 😅

I wanted to ask:

1) how representative Mocks 1-6 are for the real exam, if possible section wise comment (quant/verbal/DI)

2) what is the relative difficulty for quant/verbal compared to classic?

3) Did you feel the test to be section adaptive? (Performance in 1 section determines difficulty of initial questions on the next?)

4) Were the RC passages long (ie 2-3 long paragraphs or 1 long paragraph or 2 short para)? In my experience with official mocks all of them were either 1 long para or 2 medium paragraph with max 4-5 questions per RC.

5) Was DS more logic / statistics based? Questions from OG and DI review seem to be less pure math and more applied based. Wanted to see how the real exam is.

6) if you could give a rough breakdown of topics for quant / verbal that you encountered eg: even mix of percentage/overlapping set questions, bold face Cr etc

I know am being ambitious with my questions, but answers to some of them above, especially Q1-3 would be really insightful! Thanks for being open to questions, appreciate the gesture!

Hi, The debrief would really help. Thank you in advance for that

Would help if you could answer a few more questions:

A) Was the Data Insight section hard to complete within the time frame?
B) What was your take on DI being computer-adaptive?
C) Was the verbal and quant different from typical GMAT questions? The recent mocks that I had taken seem to have more logical questions than technical ones with questions that were not anywhere in the Gmat club or other perp materials. Was that something that you noticed in the exam also?

Hi Ajitesh,

Hope your test went well. I have below queries:

1. What was the difficulty level of CR in comparison to class edition GMAT or classic edition mocks?
Did you find the focus edition CR questions lengthier / more complex arguments / more complex options, etc.
Would really like to know your opinion on CR in focus edition.

2. How similar were the CR questions to focus edition mocks in terms of question types and more importantly, difficulty?

3. Has quant become more difficult than classic GMAT?
Any specific subsection such as NP / pnc, etc. with larger number of questions?

4. Please elaborate your take on comparative difficulty and similarity between IR and DI.
Also, any new type of graphs / questions in DI that is not seen before in IR or official questions / mocks?
Earnestly request you to talk about the kind of questions you faced in DI.
Do you think the new DI section is in general more difficult than SC in verbal?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi. How was the difficulty level of each section compared to the practice mocks 1-6? Any surprises in the sections?
Hi nnvin,

1. I am very sure that the verbal section feels like the current GMAT (I've taken the current GMAT thrice, and I have more than a decade of experience in the field).

2. As for quant, it felt like regular GMAT quant, but I made some major mistakes in how I approached the section (it was my first section).

3. I wasn't prepared for what I saw in DI. I got an MSR w/ 3 questions that I thought was absurdly long, and it messed up my timing. I've always got an 8 on IR, so I definitely wasn't expecting this.

From what I've seen, the RC passages in the practice tests were shorter and easier than what I got. However, I wouldn't generalise from this one observation.

Thank you!
Hi Rakshitah,

Remember not to rely too much on the review and edit feature, and make sure you choose the right option when the test asks you whether you want to continue the test or take a break. As for my score, I'll put it up as soon as I receive my official score report (still "Pending").

All the best for your test!

Hi Ajitesh,

Thank you for taking the time to create this post and I hope that your exam must have gone well. As a student, I have a few concerns related to New Focus Edition. Like, were there any experimental questions in this new test? Also, in what ways the new test is different from the current one in terms of an algorithm? Do you think that the official practice tests of Focus Edition are difficult or easy in comparison with the real test? How is the Data Insights, quant, and verbal section different from the current version? Lastly, what is the piece of advice you would like to give to the students who have been studying for the current version for a long time? Your feedback will be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi 12922,

I got the same verbal score in my actual Focus Edition test. I had unfortunately underestimated DI, and I paid the price.

If you're good at quant, it may not make a difference whether you take it first or last. For what it's worth, I went with Quant, DI, Verbal, because verbal is my strongest section. Before you choose your section order, consider that your first section will most likely be a cold start, and you could be tired by the time you finish the test.

1. Verbal looks and feels like CR+RC on the current GMAT. I'm a little concerned about the impact of all this extra reading on time management though. I'm looking forward to reading more debriefs as they come in to see whether this is a valid concern.

2. Yes! I was looking for this, and I did see 3 (IIRC) "verbal DS" questions.

3. I think review and edit can really hurt a test taker if they aren't careful. I strongly advise everyone taking the Focus Edition to practice using review and edit at least a few times before they take the test. The main problem I faced was that I forgot how I was planning to solve the question by the time I saw it again during review. That, and the awful review centre. I couldn't find a way to easily navigate my test, and had to go back to the review centre each time I wanted to review a question.

Verbal time management may need some work. I'm not exactly sounding the alarm here, but I think some test takers will struggle.

4. DI is the deciding factor as far as I can see. Test takers who are good at DI will like the Focus Edition. Others should take the current GMAT while they still can, especially if they are strong at SC. I don't think Geometry will make a big difference.

Makes sense. Went through your video, really helpful observations. Thanks for sharing.

Would you say that DI was more difficult than practice mocks 1-6? Also, did you come across any unseen type of graph - heard a few people getting weird graphs (something they have never seen before).

Again, thanks for all your first-hand insights. Really helpful.
