Hi- Can anyone please explain how need for American manufacturers to focus on fuel efficient engine is inferred from the passage?

Option E is clearly mentioned
but the passage no where says that Americans felt the pressure to improve fuel efficiency, rather they made alternative offerings. We do not know whether fuel injection systems are efficient.
"American manufacturers, facing a significant challenge, responded by reevaluating their strategies. They diversified their vehicle offerings, focusing on both design innovation and technological advancements. This included the adoption of computer-aided design, the introduction of fuel injection systems, and the development of enhanced safety features. "

That would be from this section.

Quote:
The post-World War II landscape saw a shift as European and Japanese manufacturers entered the market with compact, fuel-efficient models. These models offered a stark contrast to the larger, less efficient American cars that dominated the earlier era. Particularly during the oil crises of the 1970s, when fuel economy became a paramount concern for consumers, these foreign vehicles gained a strong foothold

Just in case, I have to clarify that this question doesn’t ask about fuel efficient engine. Instead the answer choices about fuel economy. Not a big difference but there is a difference for wonders no engine just the general economy and two, you can still have an inefficient engine but ann economical one. I don’t think it matters really for the sake of this question but I just wanted to tell you that there’s a difference between what you said and what the question was asking. It’s a tip for you to watch out in the future because our minds tend to simplify and paraphrase and during the process they lose important details.

I dont understand.

"These models offered a stark contrast to the larger, less efficient American cars that dominated the earlier era." so why not E?

Sorry for a late reply.
The reason he is not the choice is because the passage doesn’t say anywhere the American automotive industry was dominant. We don’t know if it was dominant globally. Therefore, we cannot say that they lost dominance.

PS. Thank you for the question. I will improve the explanation to include this detail and why the choice is wrong.

I think this is a high-quality question and I don't agree with the explanation. D and E both look like good choices and any one would have been the undisputed correct answer had the other not been present.
Option D can be inferred since the passage talks about American manufacturers needing to come up with a strategy against their Japanese counterparts who produced fuel-efficient vehicles. But there is no explicit mention of the former to focus on fuel efficiency.
Option E states that the American automobile industry lost its dominance globally which can be inferred from this part of the passage 'These models offered a stark contrast to the larger, less efficient American cars that dominated the earlier era. Particularly during the oil crises of the 1970s, when fuel economy became a paramount concern for consumers, these foreign vehicles gained a strong foothold.' Since it says 'paramount concern' and 'gained strong foothold' in the same breath, I'll lean towards option E.

Thank you.

I don't think the crisis in the 70's caused development of hybrids and electric cars which appeared in 2000's
I don't think you can infer that. There is no causality between the two. Just because both events happened, does not mean they are connected.

I made a mistake in quoting the options. When I said option C, I meant option D; when I said option D, I meant option E. I've corrected the mistake. Can you please give me the reasoning now.

Thank you and sorry the explanation did not have each answer choice explained. I have added explanation for each.
Here is the reason why E can be ruled out:

E. Incorrect. The passage only talks about the US market and does not tell us that the US automakers had global dominance to start with. This is not stated directly but you can gain this from reading the passage and references such as "these foreign vehicles gained a strong foothold." - this would indicate the passage is still referring to to the US Domestic market which was also the focus of the first paragraph "Automobile industry in the United States". If this was a global market "these foreign vehicles" would have also included the US-made cars. Thus this can only refer to the US domestic market.

Can’t quite understand how E is untrue, if the passage states that foreign vehicles are gaining a stronghold, that implies that the domestic has to be losing some dominance, even if marginal.

Sure. Good question - E) is a trap answer choice.
E) is specifically talking about Global Dominance, and the passage did not really touch on global aspects or sales outside of the US, thus it is going outside of the scope of the question. I was hoping the explanation provided the details. However, there could be variety of situations and this question starts with "According to the passage" so you want to focus only on what the passage is covering.

The passage is talking only about the US market and we know that the auto-makers have lost the market.
Foreign vehicles are gaining stronghold in the US
There is nothing in the passage telling us that the US automakers are doing well or poorly outside of the US. You can assume that since they are not doing well domestically, perhaps they are doing well globally either, but that would be a pretty far-reaching assumption. Second assumption we have to make is that there was a global dominance that the US auto-makers had, so the fact that the passage does not touch on global reach and dominance in the global space.

Helpful. Let me see if I can make it even more clear for others.

There’s two clear distinctions here
1. Although the first paragraph outlines that Ford and General Motors dominated the domestic industry, answer choice E implies that they had dominance over the global industry, which is not supported by the passage, as BB outlined
2. D does in fact, make the most sense, because although none of the actual actions taken by the domestic industry outlined in the last sentence, paragraph two EXPLICITLY mention fuel efficiency, these changes occurred because of the oil crisis. likewise, or rather to the contrary, E merely says that these two things happen simultaneously not that one was the cause of the effect of the other.

I guess that makes sense to me now. Thanks

I don’t quite agree with the solution. In the first paragraph the author is introducing US automobile industry and it evolved mentioning a transition from lux to accessible transportation. Clearly mentioning two companies, implied american companies and
its dominance by saying, 'Initially dominated by companies like Ford and...". Also in the second paragraph, it is clearly mentioned 'These models offered a stark contrast to the larger, less efficient American cars that dominated the earlier era." So choice E is inline withis.
Again For answer choice 'D' author has mentioned that they came up with different kind of solution like, "This included the adoption of computer-aided design, the introduction of fuel injection systems, and the development of enhanced safety features."
nowhere it is implied that they understood the necessity of fuel efficiency. That is why I did not choose D.
Please let me know where I faltered.

Hi. Thank you for the question.

Note the first sentence:

Quote:
The evolution of the automobile industry in the United States

The text talks about the US market. There is no mention of global dominance of the automotive market by the US companies or anything is talking about the global market. How do we know the US cars dominated? Let alone lost the dominance?

We cannot state E). As the result, D) is the best answer. I will elaborate it in the explanation as I see it is a bit weak. Sorry about that.

Quote:
when fuel economy became a paramount concern for consumers, these foreign vehicles gained a strong foothold

I don’t quite agree with the solution. The passage states, "This included the adoption of computer-aided design, the introduction of fuel injection systems, and the development of enhanced safety features. These improvements marked a concerted effort to align with changing consumer preferences and global economic conditions," but we can't infer from this that there was a specific focus on fuel efficiency
