My extempore topic (Delhi) was: Higher education must remain public and must not be privatised.
Others reported topics such as India’s dependence on Russian oil and something about greenwashing (industrial pollution-related).
All the best to those interviewing in Mumbai and Bangalore, and over Zoom.
Also, for extempore how much are we supposed to speak on the topic? ( like in mins )

Are there any dedicated instructions on this ? please let me know.

There is no hard line about it unless professors draw them

There have been interviews in which candidates spoke on them for 5 mins and rest 20 mins were spent debating and countering each others view point

So think on Extempore topic for a min and don’t write points

Instead write down the structure in which you will speak on different points

Stick to structure

Personalize your pitch, share some practical examples supporting your argument.

One can share the stand on extempore topic in beginning or at end (I personally prefer to keep it at end) but interviewers have clearly stated in a few cases to share the stand first and then speak on arguments later... so follow what they say and then what your heart says 🙂👍🏼

How much is the total interview duration?? I heard the entire duration including extempore and profile related questions is b/w 20-40 mins at max

Not sure how much my experience will help, but here you go! The panel I got had profs who were chill. (The panel in the adjoining room, however, had one prof turning up the heat on every candidate; one could hear his loud, disapproving remarks outside the room.) Now, this was my third year interviewing, and I had declined IIM Calcutta admit in my first attempt. Also, I'll be 38 by the time the new batch starts . So P1 (mid-50s) was persistent that I shouldn't be fixated on IIM Ahmedabad, I unduly took a risk by declining IIM C and by trying to get only into IIM A in my subsequent attempts. He asked why the fixation on IIM A. I couldn't get more than two-three sentences out for any question (except one about my article that won a big award this year) as I kept getting cut off. The interview ended when P1 asked why I want to do MBA, I said I need managerial skills to compete for senior roles in global media organisations, that demand skil—but I got cut off, P1 saying that I should go to media school, why I want to put myself through the hassles of learning economics, accounting, statistics, integration and all. I said that the roles I've been eyeing demand financial acumen, knowledge about strategic planning, change management etc. P1 said media companies don't come to IIM A for placement, and at my age it would be very very hard for me to get placed. I said media industry is only my preferred sector, I'm keen to work in project management in corporate, like my fellow journa—got cut off again and was told we're done.
This was unlike my last two interviews, where I could finish my answers. This time, I felt I kept getting cut off. P1 seemed to disapprove of my path and my MBA goals through and through. The note at which the interview ended (too old to get placed, wrong reason for choosing MBA) has me convinced that I need not wait for October 31.

there is a history of candidates at iima who thought they rocked the interview yet couldn’t make it and of those who thought they bombed the interview yet made it in, so guess the cat is not out of bag yet

I interviewed at Delhi on 3rd October. The panel had one senior member - dusky complexion. He converted the entire interview into a stress one. I was not expecting it to be of such nature. In between interview he told me that i had interrupted him in between and Delhi people are aggressive. I could not understand what i had done to irritate him but he looked angry and irritated - Now taking this interview as learning - I am focusing for ISB’s interview (if I receive a shortlisting).

What were the nature of questions? And can you also tell us about your extempore.

Thanks!

Extempore topic was - Should examination be banned before class IX. i took an against position. Then after asking my views on the future prospects of cement industry (current employer) they asked why they are not sponsoring the MBA. It then converted into discussion on Indian business owners are more focused on cost than revenue. Then the discussion converted into Indians do not take risk. After discussion on these points interview ended.

In a nutshell, expect the absolute unexpected then. It will most likely turn out to be quite different from what we generally prepare for.

True. We can't predict the questions. We go in wanting to tell our story, looking for an opportunity to squeeze in our rehearsed answers, but we also need to be super crisp. As in, the crux of our answer should be in our opening sentence, so that if the panel cuts us off, we'd still have communicated our main point. Might help to prepare our answers in inverted pyramid style—strongest point first, then context and other points in decreasing order of importance. (This is purely my reflection on the basis of my interview wherein I kept getting interrupted after two-three sentences.)

Thanks riya for sharing your experience with all of us. I had mine at IIM A on 5th oct, Panel 2. Interview was okay-ish, but again they were skeptical, how to get an older experienced candidate placed. I did not have any ready solutions either. Cordially told we were done. I said thankyou and came off.

4 panels. 2 professors in each. The experience was in line with what other participants described earlier. I have literally no clue what to make out of the interview. The panel keeps on interrupting and disagree with mostly what I said. IMO just be honest and realistic with your answers, the panel can catch on to anything you say and turn interview all about that piece of info.
