Hi,

Was your master’s degree from the US as well?
In that case, your international education and work experience would definitely strengthen your profile. Have you thought about your post-MBA goals yet?

A GRE score in the range of 325 would give you a strong shot at programs like ISB, IIMA PGPX, and IIMB EPGP. Beyond that, a lot will depend on your overall application quality, positioning, and storytelling.

All the Best!

Happy to connect if you’d like to discuss your profile in more detail.

Hi SHISHIR86

Very strong chances you will make it to Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad if you prepare well for the interview. ISB is also doable, but please also think from the adcoms' point of view where they may wonder how you may feel less fulfilled from a P2P learning POV while sitting in a class where the average work experience is much lower than yours. If ISB does not happen, it is not a reflection of your readiness for an MBA.
My mentees from the army and navy have gone into Tier 1 management consulting roles from IIMA PGPX, so I just want to say this clearly that IIM A is a great launchpad for your experience level. Feel free to reach out should you want support. I work with defense profiles every year and prepare them for transitioning into corporate careers. Your age is slightly on the higher side, but the fact that you already pivoted to a banking role on your own merit is very impressive.
I am linking some past resources below which I posted specifically for IIM A that may help. You may find more posts from me for ISB here

Hi people, my stats:
10th: 77%
12th: 79%
B.E (AMIE): 7.89
Age: 40

The above is clubbed with 20 years of glorious service in IAF across multiple domains in both combative and administrative roles.Presently joined a Public Sector bank due to interest in Finance and Banking. I want to upgrade into mid to senior leadership roles in finance avenues, learn new things and make long lasting connections for which I think PGPX via IIM/ISB would act as a catalyst.

Want to know where my profile stands for PGPX? Feedbacks welcome.

Hi! You already know that the GRE is currently a weak area in your profile, and your undergrad and master’s GPA are not necessarily strong supporting metrics either. So yes, I do think you should seriously work on improving the GRE.
Did you receive an interview invite from ISB? If yes, that itself suggests they liked your overall profile and that the rationale coming through in your essays was a good starting point (but we cant say for sure). Even for IIM A and IIM B, I would strongly suggest applying with an updated score because both schools place significant weight on academics. It becomes difficult when both your academic scores and GRE/GMAT are weaker parts of the profile.
One thing I found surprising is that you did not mention much about your work experience or growth trajectory over the years. I hope you do not mind me saying this directly, but your work experience is actually one of the most critical aspects in evaluating your profile, as is your post-MBA goals strategy. If you are currently underemphasizing that in your applications and essays as well, then that is likely a much bigger hurdle than you may realize.
If you would like, I am happy to do a quick review if you reach out.

Hi Digitate1897877,

You have solid academics, and 5 years of experience at TCS provides a strong professional foundation. However, since you come from a highly overrepresented applicant pool, the way you position and present your profile will become the key differentiator. It will be important to highlight the depth and impact of your projects, leadership exposure, ownership, and overall career progression in a meaningful way.
Your involvement in the family business adds a differentiated angle to your profile and can help showcase broader business exposure beyond your corporate experience. Your extracurriculars are decent and add balance to the application.

There is no safe score as such, but targeting a GMAT Focus score of at least 675+ would put you in a strong competitive position for ISB and IIMA/B/C/L

All the Best!

Hi

Question: Are you working in US or your company is US based but you are working in India?

Problem in your profile: GPA in undergrad and even in school

everything else can be well taken care of in your application. But to mitigate the risk of low academic scores, you must try to get a good GMAT/GRE

Target 675 score in GMAT or 328 in GRE that will fit to all target schools. Lower scores will shift your probability of converting schools from IIM-ABC to IIM-LIK

P.S. IIM-C doesn’t accept GRE scores so choose the test wisely

Hi,

I am not able to get complete clarity on your work experience yet — is your role more operations-focused or aligned towards business development/client-facing responsibilities? Also, have you thought through your post-MBA goals in detail and what kind of roles you want to target after the MBA? Would also help to know if you have any notable extracurriculars or leadership experiences outside work.

Your academics, especially 12th and B.Tech scores, could become a concern for some schools. To offset this, try targeting a GMAT FE score in the 645+ range to remain competitive for IIM's. You can consider the GRE as well, but keep in mind that IIMC does not accept GRE scores.

All the Best!

One thing that I would mention here is that out of 14 selections and 3 waitlists that we have worked with this year, and similar over the previous years too, we have observed that the selection process at IIMA PGPX is very unbiased towards the GMAT score alone. It is important to work equally hard on all aspects of the process.

Do you wonder:

1. When do people actually start working on their applications?
2. How do candidates with relatively low GMAT/GRE scores still secure admits?
