A full tank holds 5,120 / 128 = 40 gallons

Before the system :
Mileage = 14 mpg
Distance on a full tank = 14 * 40 = 560 miles

After the system :
The van gets the same distance using only 70% of the fuel, so its mileage increases

According to the question,
Before F.S,
1 gallon gets consumed in 14 mile.
After F.S,
14 miles can be traveled by consuming (1*70/100)=0.7 gallon
Capacity of the fuel tank= 5120 Ou
1g=128 ou
.:5120 ou=5120/128gallon=40 gallon
.:Before F.S, Distance traveled on a full tank=14*40=560 miles

Given in the question
1 gallon = 128 ounces, and the tank holds 5120 ounces.

So the tank capacity= 5120/ 128=40 gallons
initially the mileage was 14 miles per gallon,
so with the tank full= 14*40= 560 miles

with 70% improvement, the new mileage is
14/0.7= 20 miles
so for 40 gallons the vehicle would travel= 20*40= 800 miles

Extra miles= 800- 560= 240

hence the answer C. 240 is correct.

Let's look at the initial case first-->
For 128 Oz = 14 miles
For 1 Oz = (14/128) miles
For 5120 Oz = 5120 * (14/128) miles

After the fuel-saving system is installed-->
For 128*(7/10) Oz = 14 miles (Since fuel consumption is now 70% of before. For which we can multiply by (7/10))
For 1 Oz = (14*10)/(128*7) miles
For 5120 Oz = 5120*(14*10)/(128*7) miles

So we need to find (new distance) - (old distance)
Since we can see that (5120*14)/128 is common, take that out.

=5120*14/128*(1-(7/10))
Simplify to get-
=80(3)
=240

Total fuel = 5120/128= 40 gallons
14 miles per gallon- Before fuel saving, van can travel= 40*14/1= 560 miles

If we say that 1 gallon gave us 14 miles
We can say 0.7 gallons will give us 14 miles after the installation.
So after the system installed we can say if 0.7 gallons give 14 miles then 1 gallons will give 20 miles.

To note that we have 6 miles extra per gallon.

So if the total fuel was 5120 ounces = 40 gallons the extra mileage will be 40 x 6 = 240 miles

Ans should be C IMO.

In 1 gallons of fuel the van covers 14 miles. So with 70% consumption only, using unitary method, the new fuel usage would be: 0.7 gallons is used to cover 14 miles.
Now with increased efficiency, in 1 gallons of fuel the van would cover distance of = 14/0.7 = 20 miles.

The difference in distance would be(given 1 gallon = 128 ounces)
5120/128 * (20-14) = 40*6 = 240.

Original mileage: 14miles/gal
Originally, Distance covered in 1 gal = 14miles

After installing fuel-saving system (same distance in 70% of the fuel),
Distance covered in 70%*1 gal = 14miles
or, distance covered in 1 gal = \(\frac {14}{70\%} \) = 20 miles

Fuel capacity of van = 5120 ounces = \(\frac {5120}{128}\)gal = 40gal

Distance covered without the fuel-saving system installed in 40gal = (14 * 40) miles
Distance covered with the fuel-saving system installed in 40 gal = (20 * 40) miles

Tank = 5120 ounces / 128 = 40 gallons
Old range = 40 gallons *14 miles per gallon = 560 miles
Fuel usage drops to 70% so the new mileage is 14 * 10 / 7 (if fuel consumption decreases by 7/10 then mileage increases by 10/7) = 20 miles per gallon

Old mileage = 14 miles / gallon
Since the installation of the fuel-saving system, the engine uses 70% of the fuel to travel the same distance i.e., 14 miles / 0.7 gallon. This amounts to 20 miles / gallon.
