that is what i am working to determine with VA

i have examples of friends at both Wharton and Darden who received the full tuition for their first semester then moved into their appropriate percentage for the second semester.

I am going to call the first school I am admitted to and try to get a good answer on this.

I hear from MIT by 31 JAN so hoping that will work.

Thanks--please keep us updated on what you hear. The difference between 100% and GI Bill+scholarship for only one semester isn't huge, but it's enough to make me reconsider when I start my terminal leave.

yea definitely, i have no acceptances yet but heard back for 3 interviews (sloan, darden, stern)...scholarship offers (unlikely for me at this time) would definitely complicate the equation.

I have tried to really save deployment money but if this policy for semester 1 is true it could really help. I am most concerned with year 1 as I want to pursue a career in strategy consulting and many of my vet friends were hired by Booz, Bain, or BCG and got major signing bonuses and tution assistance for year 2.

My buddy at Stern actually got hired from Booz and they picked up his second year tuition.

I know these claims sounds crazy but I personally spoke to and know these guys.

I've got a buddy getting his EMBA at USC while on active duty and the Marine Corps is picking up the entire tab. He seems to think the policy is changing though...

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see firms help out with tuition or living expenses if they plan on hiring you. My wife and I were just talking yesterday about whether or not a firm might help out with health insurance after the 18 month extended eligibility for Tricare ran out.

Yeah, that's a bit different situation--100% tuition repayment applies to anything you're able to do while you're still on active duty. I heard from another Haas admittee who has talked to some vets' club guys there, and they seem to think being on active duty at the start of the semester will mess up some of your housing benefits.

I guess I should try to find someone from the VA who knows for sure, rather than doing a lot of speculation.

Rampant speculation is the way to go.

Serveral of the military guys I've talked to have said there will probably be some delay between your eligibility for benefits and actually receiving them, but I hadn't heard about losing BAH for the remainder of a semester.

Excellent, I'll just go poll some random lance corporals, they always have the best information.

The spouse network is always better informed than the Lance Corporal network. They're only two people removed from the CO vice about 10. At The Basic School, we always learned about the surprises our CO was going to pull from the married guy in my squad. He'd send out a mass phone tree/email telling them we'd be home late/early. The spouses were ALWAYS right.

In regards to the GI bill, there will be a delay between the time you apply for benefits and the time you receive them. Your best bet is after getting admitted, get your certification letter ASAP and then following up with the registrar. The GI Bill will likely be run from a central point in the university (even if the B-School has their own finaid office) and will be on a different timeline/schedule. As is, you should be prepared to go a semester without it. Unless they've streamlined the process in the last 3 years (not likely), there are several back and forths to verify your attendance and classes. This'll take some time and you will mess up the paperwork the first time. Once you're in, you then have to verify your attendance every month via WAVE (*edit..just looked and you don't have to verify with wave for 9/11 GI Bill..sweet).

As for the 100% TA, when I was on AD (a long time ago and before 9/11 GI bill) you had to be on AD through the time you would receive the benefit and if you were an officer or in a critical career field you had to agree to stay on for a period of time afterwards. Even still there were tuition caps of about $250 per credit hour (or about 1/5 of a course at an MBA program) or up to 4200 a year. AR 621_5 is the Army publication covering it (you can google it), which should give you a good sense of what it entails. The services have all agreed to have the same standards, so that should apply to everyone.

Of course, it's a bit different if you're in one of the MA programs offered by the military that assumes you'll stay on AD. But I don't think that's the case if you're looking at using the GI Bill too.

Relatively new to this site and just wanted to introduce myself and post my profile for whatever it's worth.
Marine helo pilot/31 yrs old/top 25 undergrad lib arts/740 gmat

Schools:
HBS- reject w/o interview
MIT- interviewed/rejected
Tuck- accepted
Ross/Tauber- accepted
Tepper-accepted

Not sure where I'll end up. It's going to be a tough choice.
I know this year's apps are pretty much done, but for folks thinking about applying next year, I highly recommend "How To Get Into the Top MBA Programs" by Richard Montauk and the Manhattan GMAT guidebooks (set of 8).

Just discovered this thread...

Anybody else headed to Columbia by chance? Marine 0302 here. I applied 'early decision', so I actually heard from CBS back in November.

Hope everyone's applications are coming along, we need more vets getting accepted!

I'm small potatoes compared to some of you other guys. I just got my second admit today- Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis. So I've got Texas A&M and WashU on the table as of now. I just completed my interview with Darden this morning, so I'll be waiting until the end of March to see how that pans out. Strangely, I've heard back and been interviewed by every school I applied to except for McCombs. I submitted my app for UT in early January and I haven't heard anything at all since.

McCombs' admissions process seems like a mess from the outside. I hear there is a lot more student involvement there than at most schools, so their schedules tend to get in the way.

Yeah, it kinda seems that way to me as well. I'm not losing sleep over it as of now. Having a couple admits definitely takes the edge off.
