Actually, I do have a lot of personal decorations -- I am a female combat veteran, who commanded 120 Soldiers in Iraq. That's not my only acheivement in 8 years of active duty service since graduating from Georgetown ROTC. I received National and University awards while in college. I am pursuing my degree so that afterwards I can teach cadets at USMA-West Point. However, maybe that's narrow of me...seeing as how my life should be judged based on my mediocre GMAT equivilant of 560. Pardon me that I had such lofty expectations to have actually believed that these universities were looking for a 'total-scholar'.

I don't mean to sound so caustic...however, the GMAT comments seem a bit superficial.

C20 -

I think that although the previous comments came off as harsh, they were trying to be helpful. Typically, schools want you to be in the general GMAT range for their program. However... there are certainly things you could have done in your life that would merit overlooking a suboptimal score, even at a top 3. Usually these things are not academic, but perhaps doing something incredibly unique like staring a non-profit for abandoned children in Peru would make them overlook your score. But that doesn't even guarantee that they will. With that said, I think that give your stats, Kenan-Flagler would be a good school to apply to. I honestly don't know what your chances of acceptance would be, but I think you have a shot. I get the sense that they do tend to look at applicants as total package. I think last year they interview something like 85% of applicants (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) because they want to get a feel for who the applicant is (on and off paper). If you think you can demonstrate why KF would be a good fit for you (obviously not just because they are one of the only ones still accepting applications) and your goals line up with what they have to offer, you should get on it. It is late in the game, but I met a several students there that got admitted R4. If you bring something diverse to the classroom, your odds will be better - so I imagine a good deal of your chances hinge on how many people they have already admitted that are similar to you in background. If you need help with anything, PM me. I have already been accepted, so I suppose I did something right and may be able to give you some insight.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do!

Now that you've divulged that much, I think you do have a decent shot at Kenan-Flagler, since UNC is very very far from the schools you've got dings from so far. One other thing about KF is I think you interview directly with admissions people and executive coaches, as opposed to strictly 2nd year students at most places, who seem to have more pull on the final decisions. That is, unless you choose an alumni interview.

Saw this on ClearAdmitWiki. Can anyone confirm that they've sent some acceptances out for R3 candidates?

"Current State: 3/2/2011: Quite a few Round 3 applicants have conducted their interviews, and the first acceptances have been sent out well in advance of the March 21st decision release date"

I'm sure every school sends really early decisions to the candidates they absolutely covet: offsprings of sovereigns, high-profile professional athletes, nobel laureates, etc. By the way, anybody can update Clearwiki, right?

So C20, when is the retest date? Your story is quite good and a place like KF especially seems to appreciate people like yourself. At least I know they really drooled when I talked just about the National Guard. I had a score similar to yours the first time and it was largely due to lack of focus during test time because I had over studied. I did the Manhattan GMAT books sort of half assed even and got 670. 670 is not to die for,but will help the admissions committee check off the GMAT box as acceptable and really read your application. Best of luck and in my opinion the Manhattan GMAT approach was the best I read.

Why take the GRE over the GMAT? Business schools take the GRE but definitely prefer the GMAT.

I think with a 650+ you would be good to go at K-F.

I'm wondering if the fact that you are trying to go to an MBA program, while remaining in the Army isn't actually hurting you because honestly an MBA from a top B school while you have full intentions to stay in don't make all that much sense. These programs are all for the most part geared for Corporate America.
Granted if you planned on going into Acquisitions or something of that sort it wouldn't hurt but they offer MBA's at the Naval Post Graduate School and I'm guessing the Army does the same, that concentrate on things like operations, acqusitions, etc for the military. I'm just curious if your long term goals really reflect what the adcom's want to see, when there are very reputable higher education degrees offered at military institutions that offer specific MBA's for those looking to advance a military career.
I'm just playing devils advocate here and trying to maybe give you another perspective on it, although of course I don't know what your actual long term plans are or anything so I could be way off. Otherwise I'm willing to bet if your GMAT rose a bit, you'd be in serious contention for any top school.

hey C20,

I saw a thread which might be of some use to you. This is the reply some one who had a 580 GMAT and is a VP of a family owned business got when asked about his/her chances at HBS. You can read the whole thread here.

aringo-client-with-580-at-hbs-bull-109711.html

An admit with a 580 to any of the elite schools is going to have some really special circumstances going for him/her. Examples might be founding a large publicly traded company, being military Medal of Honor recipient, or having a last name like Kennedy or Bush. If these, or similar situations, don't apply to you, then 580 probably isn't going to cut it.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but the caliber of people applying to a place like HBS is so high that a person would need to have something really special to distinguish them from the glut of highly successful, ambitious applicants.

Does any one know when R3 applicants can expect to hear from UNC? The wait is killing me.

I got an email from the admission records that I have to send in my transcripts again as they are not able to access it due to a system upgrade. I sent it over and got a mail that they will be reviewing my file. **** Scared!!
