Hey man,
Thanks for writing dude. I like your stories, and I think that you can probably set up yourself with a really good profile for the AdComs.
Let me start with your questions:
1. Enlisted Service is good. Military service is good in general, and especially when you have leadership positions (which inevitably happens). Your two meritorious promotions and your excellence beyond your peer group (you will need to PROVE this in some way) will help a lot, and you should emphasize these two items.
2. I think that if you simply tell your pro-sports story in an essay it will seem strange to no one. So just write it up in your optional essay and you will be fine.
3. Aha! The BIG question. First of all as a dude who comes from the Marines, and who seems to have excelled there, you can probably punch out of your class a bit. It's a bit hard to say where exactly you should go without a real GMAT, but let's say this: that you should REALLY to everything you can to get as high as possible on your GMAT. If you can crack a 710, the sky is the limit. Some Top 10 schools may still be tough for you, but you are sure to have fantastic stories, and your service will be much appreciated as well as your leadership.
Since you are taking your GMAT in Jan/Dec, you will have at least one if not two more opportunities to retake eventually, if things don't go as well as they could the first time around (which is totally normal). But my advice: Make sure you are applying with the highest GMAT possible. You have a Business degree, but although you have fantastic experience in the meanwhile, you've been out of the white-collar professional world for a bit, so the GMAT is your ticket, as it will show that you have the potential to succeed in business.
Other than that you'll have to see what goals you will present tot he AdCom that will excite you yet at the same time make sense with your experience.
Assuming you get a 690 or so, I'd say you can apply to a mix of schools on your list, so schools like Darden Johnson, AND UNC Kelly.... How far you need to go down the pole will depend on that GMAT score.
So basically, things looks good... the pressure is not a bit for the GMAT

but no big deal there, as you wisely are taking it early enough to correct for any mishaps...
Just keep on trucking the way you have been, and write me back when you get your GMAT score, and a bit about your goals and we'll see from there where you can and should apply to.
