B , because that is the only one that compares correctly "unlike winter greens..escarole"

A , C compare the wrong thing.
E has a wordy phrase. ( lengthy cooking time )
D is also too wordy.

Unlike the many winter greens that have tough leaves and thus require a lengthy cooking time, those of escarole need little or no cooking.

A. many winter greens that have tough leaves and thus require a lengthy cooking time, those of escarole need
B. many winter greens that have tough leaves and thus require a lengthy cooking time, escarole needs
C. tough leaves of many winter greens and that they require for a lengthy cooking time, escarole needs
D. tough leaves of many winter greens and the requirement that they have a lengthy cooking time, those of escarole need
E. lengthy cooking time required by the many winter greens with tough leaves, escarole needs

STEP 1:What is this sentence trying to tell me?
After 1st reading I get: Those need little or no cooking and whatever need little or no cooking is unlike something else.

STEP 2: What is modifying, pardon the pun, what and how does the underlined part relate to the original sentence?
that ... modifies greens and of escarole modifies those.

STEP 3: What do I think is wrong with the sentence based on what I know?
I have no idea what those is supposed to refer to; how do I fix this?-btw D is out because it repeats the aforementioned mistake.

STEP 4: Split and eliminate only by applying grammar rules you know, at least until you run out of options (:
At this point we only have B C and E left
E is illogical- E compares time to escarole
C compares leaves to escarole- Well escarole has leaves.
The following example better illustrates my point; John, a man, is better than all men.(How can John be better than himself?)

STEP 5: Read original sentence, replacing the underlined part with your answer.

Comparison SC.

Comparison must be grammatically and logically correct. We cannot just compare Apples with oranges. We need to compare comparable entities.

We need to compare winter greens with escarole
Or
Compare leaves of winter greens with those (leaves) of escarole

A. many winter greens that have tough leaves and thus require a lengthy cooking time, those of escarole need
Highlighted entities are not comparable.
Winter green Vs Leaves of escarole

B. many winter greens that have tough leaves and thus require a lengthy cooking time, escaroleneeds
Correct comparison. - Correct

C. tough leavesof many winter greens and that they require for a lengthy cooking time, escaroleneeds
Highlighted entities are not comparable.
Leaves Vs escarole

D. tough leavesof many winter greens and the requirement that they have a lengthy cooking time, thoseof escarole need
Comparison is correct
but then we have other errors " and the requirment .."

E. lengthy cooking time required by the many winter greens with tough leaves, escaroleneeds
Highlighted entities are not comparable.

you want to compare one species of plant to another.
In A winter green is being = compared to leaves of escarole. not the correct meaning.

Sentence want to convey that X (winter greens ) has tough leaves and that's why require a lengthy cooking time but Y (escarole) doesn't.

I got confused with D but since comparison kind of looked ok but with after further observation that it is lengthy and also it compares "tough leaves" and not only leaves then the only correct option with correct comparison is B

A. many winter greens that have tough leaves and thus require a lengthy cooking time, those of escarole need - comparison issue - those seems to refer to leaves -- Leaves and winter green
B. many winter greens that have tough leaves and thus require a lengthy cooking time, escarole needs - Correct
C. tough leaves of many winter greens and that they require for a lengthy cooking time, escarole needs - tough leaves and that they require are not parallel forms
D. tough leaves of many winter greens and the requirement that they have a lengthy cooking time, those of escarole need - illogical comparison: that the LEAVES are unlike the REQUIREMENT that they have a lengthy cooking time.
E. lengthy cooking time required by the many winter greens with tough leaves, escarole needs - escarole is illogically compared to the cooking time

the comparison in D is fine. As per the intended meaning and also basic knowledge that the leaves are cooked and not the plant I chose D. I wish to know why D is wrong

D. Tough leaves of many winter greens and the requirement that they have a lengthy cooking time, those of escarole need.

Here 3 things are being compared: Tough leaves, the requirement, and those of escarole. The requirement is not parallel to those of escarole.Notice that A and B are saying that the requirement is a result of tough leaves, not in addition to tough leaves.

To everyone who is eliminating choice D with reasons like wordy/awkward, please know that this strategy will hurt you, speaking from personal experience

Anyway, as per me, the comparison in D is okay
'Tough leaves of ....' compared to 'those of escarole'
those can refer to winter greens or tough leaves but since the pronoun in dependent clause refers to the subject of first clause, the pronoun 'those of' refers to leaves and not winter greens

Problem in D is about the sentence structure
"tough leaves of many winter greens and the requirement that they have a lengthy cooking time, those of escarole need"

'and the requirement...'
and brings parallelism into the party and there is nothing parallel to 'the requirement'

Someone please correct me if I am wrong!

TIA

E. lengthy cooking time required by the many winter greens with tough leaves, escarole needs

This question is based on Comparison.

The sentence begins with the conjunction ‘unlike’. The noun or noun phrase placed after the conjunction is the object of comparison and the noun that appears after the comma must be parallel to it. In this sentence, one type of greens is being compared to many winter greens on the basis of tough leaves and lengthy cooking time.

In Option A, the ‘many winter greens’ are compared to ‘those of escarole’. The pronoun ‘those’ refers to ‘leaves’, so the comparison is not parallel. So, Option A can be eliminated.

In Option B, ‘many winter greens’ is compared to ‘escarole’. Since this comparison is appropriate, B is the best option. This option also maintains parallelism in the way the basis of comparison is described.

In Option C, ‘the tough leaves’ are compared to ‘escarole’. So, Option C can also be eliminated.

In Option D, ‘the tough leaves’ are appropriately compared to ‘those of escarole’. However, the addition of the phrase “the requirement that they have a lengthy cooking time” makes the comparison inappropriate as this noun phrase is also being compared to ‘those of escarole’. So, Option D can also be eliminated.

In Option E, ‘lengthy cooking time’ is compared to ‘escarole’. So, Option E can also be eliminated.

Therefore, B is the most appropriate option.
