Regarding the Wharton view, I think most applicants are going to be hesitant about deviating from the norm no matter how encouraging that video was.

Yes, and that's why those who are hesitant from deviating from the norm more likely than not "blend in" with the mass of other applicants, and therefore have far less of a chance of getting in.

MBA types are by nature more risk averse than the general business population -- so top b-schools would rather take the more "adventurous" folks within an already risk averse pool.

As I've always said before -- build a life, not a resume. Unfortunately, too many MBA applicants limit themselves to building a resume (i.e. "what will look good to [adcoms, employers, my parents]") - which makes them more cookie cutter and expendable, whether it's in b-school admissions, recruiting, or anything else.
