Hi MKS,

I have almost read and i think i can easily find out what the question wants me to . For example, for a weakening question, I know i have to first find the conclusion and get the assumptions on which the argument made the conclusion. Once i get the assumptions, then i have to choose one of the answer which contradicts or calls into doubt the conclusion.

The problem which i am facing is within the given time, I am unable to assume correctly, and even if i assume correctly, i am not able to co-relate them to the option to find out the correct answer.

Hope you get my point. :(

Thanks

You are correct on a few points. Identifying the conclusion is absolutely critical and spotting assumptions is key to success.

But, I would make a small change to your overall strategy. You say that you have to "get the assumptions" before you go to the answer choices. That is a difficult and risky proposition because, as you mention, sometimes you will "guess" wrong on the assumptions and then the answer choices don't connect. There are many possible assumptions to any given argument, so "guessing" the assumptions as part of your analysis of the argument is not a solid strategy.

You need to identify the conclusion and understand the connection between the conclusion and premises. As you go through the answer choices, you can then "spot" the answer choices that are relevant to the assumptions (the logical gaps between the conclusion and premises). I recommend that you shift your strategy to stop looking for assumptions in the argument and spend that time analyzing the answer choices to see which are relevant to the argument. Frequently you can throw out and option or two for being out of scope, so you really are only doing this deep analysis on a few answer choices.

Try that out and see if it helps...

Hi Kyle,

Thank you so much for the suggestion. it is really working for me. I am able to now eliminate 3 answers easily and have to tackle 2 of the options. Could you also please tell me how to proceed further. The problem which I am facing is, if I practice the questions from OG and VR in book, am able to get correct answer for almost 70% questions.

But when I took up the MGMAT test today for verbal, I couldn't get many answer correct . Again I was able to narrow it down to 2 options but I am not sure why am I picking the incorrect one. Could you please help me in this.

for SC, when I took test today, I was able to get 12 questions correct out of 15 questions. Could you please comment on how am I attacking SC?

Appreciate your help.

Thanks
Rahul

I'm glad to hear that you have improved in CR. That is great news!

Do you have a sense for how difficult the CR questions were that you were missing? Very often when I'm am working with students and I see they underperform in a certain area, I look at the difficulty of the questions and see that for that particular exam they got a high percentage of really hard questions, so their performance doesn't really represent their ability level.

Can you give me any more insight into what you are doing when you get down to the last 2 options? It does get much harder when you get down to 2 options, but hopefully you have worked through the first options quickly so you can analyze the remaining options and go back to the argument to review the specifics of the argument.

What can you tell me about SC? You seem to be performing well...
